How to get Larry involved

He is our best player, and yes...team's scheme for him every game to try and take him out. But it happens to other elite WR's as well and they can still get the ball. It might just be the mediocre QB play, or the shaky line, but we really need to get Larry some catches. I am curious why we never throw a bomb down field to Larry and let him go and get it. There are positives to him being taken out of the game, such as leaving other guys open like our TE's and second/third WR's. I would just really like to see Larry get more involved...

He needs to be crossing the field more often. From width, to either the slot position, the backfield, or opposite side all together.

It can diagnose zone coverage, move him into a position to crack back block on runs, release him from a bracketed safety, and open up the middle for out TE's to get more open.

It sure looks like Floyd wont be causing havoc on the other side of the field anytime soon.... So that, to me, is his best chance to get more looks.

I was interested in seeing how the Lions used Calvin Johnson tonight against the whiners D. Seems more than half the time he was lining up in the slot on either side of the field. And he was mainly cutting across the field avoiding sidelines for the most part.

I think they'll have to devise more plays for Larry in the slot, imo. At least 5-10 plays a game.

I agree, but we are a better team when Larry is able to cause havoc, there is no doubt about that.

If Larry doesn't make another catch all season and we win the super bowl, I think Fitz would be just as happy to have a ring. He doesn't need to have a lot of catches to have influence on the game. The double/triple teams leaves other guys open, like Heap today, and we get the ball down field anyways.

I am more concerned about getting Floyd involved in the game more because he has the speed to stretch the field and open it up for Fitz.

You get Floyd involved = you get Fitz open

The best way to get Larry involved AND to ensure our success at the same time, is to develop a respectable running game.

Our running game remain atrocious and I have very little faith that Beanie Wells can materially change that... Our oline of course needs to figure it out as well, but, I remain amazed by, for such a big guy, how easy Beanie goes down and how "small" he actually runs...

The problems are that Doucet and Roberts are playing well and we need a TE or FB to help in pass protection. Since Floyd is #4 on the depth chart, his value is nil until our line protects better so we can use more 4 wide sets or one of the aforementioned receivers gets hurt.

Makes absolute sense, I forgot to realize the the fact that we use extra protection (TE,FB) for pass plays which leaves Floyd the odd man out.

I did get a kick out of the Cards lining up 5 wide on a third and two. One thing about this team is that you just never know what they're going to do.

I'm all for teams throwing 3 guys out there to bracket Fitzgerald. That means that everyone else is single covered.

It's one game, so let's not fall all over ourselves. But this is the worst thing that you can go against the Pats. Their best defensive players are ILBs and safeties (although that LDE is making an argument the last two weeks), which is exactly where you'd be sending Larry on those crossing patterns.

The conundrum for Mike Miller and Whis is that running the ball pulls up the safeties, but run blitzes then have to be picked up by keeping people in and getting the ball out quickly. I'd love to give Larry 2 jump balls 30 yards down field a quarter, but when you're trying to keep the ball out of the hands of a good offense like New England's, you can't afford to put the ball up for grabs.

By consistently keeping two defenders tied up he is helping guys **** Doucet and other WR do an outstanding job. They are getting a chance to show their skills and they are cashing in. Larry is all for winning and has had much to do with it so far even though he has made few catches. Sooner or later teams are going to have to change their defensive schemes and Larry will start getting open. Meantime he will block, take two defenders with him and be a physical presence on the field. When you take two guys to cover you on every down the results are immeasurable. Larry is not all about Larry but all about winning. Fortunately for us.

When we have two guys fighting for the starting QB spot, neither of them is just going to "trust Larry to go get it". Their job is on the line! Larry doesn't have the speed to just get open. I agree with the assesment of we need to find ways to get him the ball.

One thing I LOVED was the fade route we ran. I don't remember us running that fade since the Kurt Warner era (where it was used almost every redzone!). Was nice seeing it brought back.

I don't know about this. I've seen several throws to Larry that were thrown into heavy coverage the last two games and in Pre Season.
