Clemson baseball heads into its ACC opener against Notre Dame on a heater.
At 17-1 overall, the Tigers have gotten off to one of the best starts in the nation. A year after making their first Super Regional appearance in 14 years, Erik Bakich's club is ranked No. 4 in Perfect Game's Top 25, No. 5 in Baseball America's rankings, and No. 6 in this week's USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.
Second baseman Jarren Purify leads the team in hitting with a .462 average, .535 on-base percentage and .788 slugging percentage while hitting three home runs and collecting four doubles. The Tigers' transfer portal class has also stepped up in a big way.
Outfielder Dominic Listi, who transferred from Indiana State, is second on the team in hitting with a .333 average and a .518 OBP. Cal Baptist transfer Josh Paino is third with a .324/.420/.544 slash line.
The Tigers have won 15 straight games entering the weekend, including a three-game sweep of Davidson last weekend and a pair of wins over Liberty in midweek play on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In last Sunday's win over Davidson, Clemson erupted for all 11 runs of an 11-4 win over its final three innings at the plate. Cam Cannarella hit his first home run of the season, a three-run shot that put the Tigers ahead 5-4 as part of an eight-run seventh inning. Listi cleared the bases with a three-run double later in the inning to put the game out of reach.
Notre Dame (10-4 overall) swept a two-game midweek series with Winthrop, but were swept at Wake Forest in their ACC series opener last weekend. Fighting Irish pitching gave up 36 runs in the sweep, including 19 on Friday and 11 on Sunday. At 9-21 in league play last year, Notre Dame had the second-worst mark of any team in the ACC.
Friday: Aidan Knaak (2-0, 5.30 ERA) vs. Jack Radel (1-1, 6.57 ERA)
Saturday: Ethan Darden (3-0, 1.64) vs. Jackson Dennies (2-1, 3.00)
