Wisconsin women's hockey defeated the rival Minnesota Golden Gophers 6-2 on Friday in the NCAA Women's Frozen Four semifinal. The triumph sent the Badgers back to the national championship game, where they will meet the Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday afternoon.
Badgers vs. Buckeyes with a national title on the line has become a familiar refrain. The two met in 2023, a 1-0 Wisconsin triumph, then again in 2024, a 1-0 Ohio State win. This year marks the third straight title game between the two women's hockey powerhouses. The result will break the current 1-1 tie in those matchups.
Looking back further, Sunday will mark Wisconsin's fourth national championship game appearance in the last five seasons, ignoring a 2020 campaign that was cut short by COVID-19. The Badgers are 3-1 in that time, the other triumphs coming over Northeastern (2021) and Minnesota (2019). Ohio State, meanwhile, is in the title game for the fourth consecutive season. It defeated Minnesota Duluth in 2022 in Wisconsin's one non-title-game season over the last half-decade.
The top-ranked Badgers enter Sunday's game with an incredible 37-1-2 overall record. That one loss: a 3-2 defeat on the road at Ohio State in mid-November. The Badgers are 24-0-2 since that contest. With a win on Sunday, they would complete one of the greatest single seasons in the sport's history.
