A predictably chalky opening slate gave way to some second-round excitement last weekend. Reigning champion South Carolina actually trailed Indiana at halftime. Kansas State and Kentucky made for an overtime banger; Maryland and Alabama was a double-overtime double-banger.The JuJu Watkins injury has thrown an unshakable solemnity across women’s basketball. Her absence will loom large and her stardom has real gravity, but there’s still so much to celebrate in the tournament’s field. USC is still a tough out, mustering all it can to “Fight On” with Kiki Iriafen and Rayah Marshall. Paige Bueckers’ UConn Huskies are absolutely balling right now. The Gamecocks have dynastic swagger. Lauren Betts just dropped a 30-piece in Westwood.
Sweet 16 action begins Friday afternoon with an installment of an all-time rivalry: Duke and UNC. The Gamecocks then continue their title defense against Shyanne Sellers, Kaylene Smikle and resilient Maryland, while LSU’s Bayou big three has a tough draw with balanced NC State. The night ends with top-seeded UCLA favored over Ole Miss.
Saturday begins with a smash matchup: Hailey Van Lith’s insurgent TCU Horned Frogs against All-Americans Hannah Hidalgo, Olivia Miles and Notre Dame. Madison Booker, aka Midrange Maddie, has Texas dueling the iconic Tennessee Volunteers program, and Geno Auriemma’s pursuit of a 12th ring meets Jennie Baranczyk’s Oklahoma. The round concludes with USC and Kansas State in Saturday primetime.
