The momentum Howell gained from nearly erasing a nine-run deficit against Brighton Monday seemed to carry over into the rematch between the rival baseball teams Thursday.
Howell rolled to a 14-3 victory over Brighton in a game that ended after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule. The Highlanders built their 14-3 lead through three innings.
On Monday, Brighton jumped out to a 9-0 lead after three innings before Howell scored seven unanswered runs over the next three innings. The Highlanders had the tying run at the plate in the sixth before Josh Metz got the final four outs for the save.
Nick Hoorn and JT Thomas hit home runs to power the Highlanders’ attack. Hoorn, Thomas, Daniel Hampton, Josh Soneral and Jimmy Steakley each drove in two runs for Howell (2-2).

Pinckney 6, Dundee 5
Pinckney 16, Dundee 1
Hayden Beaver was 4-for-4 with four runs and two RBIs, Jacob Monroe drove in four runs and Nolan Carruthers drove in three runs for Pinckney (3-1) in the second game.
In the first game, Owen Zylka struck out seven batters in 4 2/3 innings and had two RBIs.
Hartland 11, Salem 1
Lucas Frack drove in three runs and Bobby Griffon was 2-for-2 with two RBIs for Hartland (1-0).
Charyl Stockwell 5, Stockbridge 1
Charyl Stockwell 12, Stockbridge 0
The Sentinels didn’t allow a hit in 11 innings to sweep Stockbridge.
Noah Piesko threw no-hitter and fanned 13 batters in seven innings in the first game. Mickey Brown had eight strikeouts in three innings and Ryan Eikey pitched the final inning to combine for a no-hitter in the nightcap.
Drew Goodwin drove in three runs in the second game.
Hartland 4, Salem 2
Addie Frantti had two goals and one assist, as Hartland ended a two-game losing streak by winning its KLAA West opener.
Gracie Kastamo had Hartland’s other goals. Claire L’Esperance had two assists.
“We had a couple of games where we lost to a couple of very good teams,” Hartland coach Andrew Kartsounes said. “I thought our last game we weren’t connecting as well and being creative together. Today we really stepped it up. I thought we played well as a team today and really moved in a positive direction.”
Brighton 2, Canton 1
Brighton is off to its first 3-0 start since 2019, ending a four-game winless streak (0-2-2) in its rivalry with Canton.
Brynn Bobby and Kyla Bobby scored for the Bulldogs.
Brighton 2, Northville 0
Olivia Sebestyen and Brynn Bobby scored for Brighton, which got a shared shutout from Macy Martin and Anna Brown-Nall on Tuesday.
Plymouth 86, Hartland 51
Hartland’s only victories in individual events were by Roman Ignagni in shot put (45 feet, 10 inches), Raymond Schleif in discus (131-2) and Chris Collins in high jump (5-3).
Plymouth 73, Hartland 64
Hartland freshman Hannah DePestel made her high school debut by winning the 400 in 59.26 seconds and the 200 in 27.39. She was also on a first-place 3,200 relay team.
Elliana Neuer won the 1,600 in 5:24.24 and was on two winning relays for Hartland.
Brighton B 25, Pinckney 0
Luke Blow scored five goals, while Loren Deslieres and Caden Friemark had four each.
Tecumseh 9, Brighton B 5
Blow had three goals for Brighton.
Brighton 13, Birmingham 7
Ella Toth had four goals and one assist, Mia Balogh three goals, and Maggie Burchfield two goals and three assists for Brighton (2-0).
Howell 8, Dexter 4
Ava Deyo had three goals and Janie Mitter two for Howell.
