How well or poorly did the sharing of Sun Devil Stadium work out for ASU and the Cardinals?

This just might be a huge mistake by the U of M. Wayne Huizenga is first and always a businessman. As of 2008 Dolphin Stadium will host the Dolphins , Hurricanes and Florida Marlins. The Hurricanes will now be renters.

Hurricanes opt to leave Orange Bowl

MIAMI (Reuters) - Miami's Orange Bowl, one of the country's most famous sports stadiums, faces an uncertain future after their historic residents, the University of Miami's football team, voted to leave.

The University's Board of Trustee's agreed Tuesday to a plan that will see their football team, the Hurricanes, move to Dolphin Stadium for the 2008 season, a University spokeswoman said.

UM, who have won five national championships, have played at the Orange Bowl since it opened in 1937.

"This is a painful and sad decision. We all love the Orange Bowl, its history and traditions," University of Miami President Donna E Shalala told the team's Web site.

"Mayor (Manny) Diaz and the Commissioners of the City of Miami made an extraordinary effort to identify funds and design a renovation. But in the end it wasn't enough," she added.

The decision will leave the Orange Bowl, owned by the city of Miami, without a resident team and source of regular income.

The stadium has been home to five NFL Superbowls -- the last one was held in 1979.

The venue was also home for the Miami Dolphins until they moved to Dolphin Stadium in 1986.

Although the Orange Bowl is held in great affection by many fans it lacks many of the facilities found at modern stadiums and UM had been pressing for redevelopment for some time.

Dolphin Stadium, which is also used by Major League Baseball team The Florida Marlins, hosted this year's Superbowl.

"We are committed to providing the best facilities for our student-athletes and fans," said UM Athletic Director Paul Dee.

"The decision to move to Dolphin Stadium was made for that reason. Our student-athletes will be playing in one of the best facilities in the country and the fan experience' will be first-class."

This is an excellent decision and was inevitable.

The Orange bowl is a run-down mess, located in a ghetto, and fans of many schools have been telling their administrations for years that they don't like going there.

Miami seems to be serious about shedding the renegade image and upgrading the whole college football experience for the fans, including their own. I applaud them.

A ghetto?

While the Orange Bowl deteriorated, the City of Miami built Mickey Arrison 2 Basketball arenas for his Heat. The second one included 4 berths for his Carnival Cruise Line luxury liner boats, free of charge. The first one wasn't good enough for Mickey.

U of Miami is a private institution and does not get a taxpayer funded facility a la FSU, U of Fl, U of S FL, FIU, FAU, UCF. Wayne Huizenga has screwed every tenant he has ever had for his facilities. Ask John Henry or Jeffery Loria.

I hope it works out well for U of Miami, but I have doubts about their landlord.

WH is a prick - i'm a fan of both the hurricanes and marlins - i'm very tenuous about renting from wayne, his leases have traditionally been far from favorable

however, he does have some good political clout and continues to get money to tap into DS - he's always been kind to the dolphins and maybe the canes will get some residual love

the OB is a mess and UM is private - they do not have the state money as noted - this should provide a revenue boost to the university that they can use for their facilities - hate to see the OB go as it is such a unique venue

the atmosphere will be vastly different and the collegiate feel will be negated some - however, i'm hoping the revenue can help keep them competative

i'm also hoping that the city of Miami will now turn it's attention to the marlins and use that money earmarked for UM to finally get something done for the fish

Like SDS, the Orange Bowl is old enough that it may just be beyond repair.
