Lomax to Green 84
Hall of Famer
Harry Greene very eloquently and clearly spelled out exactly what I think the Cards will do with the 6th pick. Contrary to many national publications, the Cards have done a very competent job of filling holes through free agency. Name a year in the last 10 years where we sit at a spot and can literally take whoever falls to us and still get an elite player-Suggs, Leftwich, Newman, Johnson, even Palmer if things go right.
The Cards are positioning themselves to get the best guy available at #6 and I agree with Harry that this is the approach that they will take:
1. No trades will be made before the draft. The Cards are going to wait and see who is there when they pick. If their guy is gone then they try to trade down.
2. Terrell Suggs is their #1 guy, but they aren't going to mortgage the future and the bank account to move up to the 3rd slot to grab him. Sure Suggs is great, but we aren't yet a super bowl caliber team so we will wait and hope he falls, if not we either trade down or take the best available player.
3. Terrence Newman is also very high on their list and probably is #2 on their wants list. Ed made an excellent point a week or so ago that it is interesting that the Cards have not yet brought in anyone to return punts and Newman is lights out as a punt returner and a great cover guy.
4. If both Suggs and Newman are gone but a "franchise quarterback" is still there they will take the quarterback because of the value of the pick. Harry says that they like McCown, but they will not pass up the opportunity to take a franchise caliber quarterback especially since that guy will come with #6 slotted money instead of the typical #1 overall slot that franchise type quarterbacks fall into.
5. If none of these scenerios is available when the Cards are on the clock they will look to move down.
I love Harry Greene's take on the Cardinals and especially on the draft. Too often many of us get caught up in the moment and think that we have to have so and so and that there are no other options. Harry does an excellent job of showing that their are options and that teams are not just building for next year, but are thinking to the future as well.
