What the h%ll is the front office thinking? Maybe they'll sign Orosco again?

This from Rotoworld.
The Diamondbacks and Terry Mulholland have reached a preliminary agreement on a minor league contract.
He'd receive $800,000 if he wins a spot in Arizona's bullpen. The Diamondbacks might be better off if they don't carry a lefty, especially if Brad Halsey wins a rotation spot. The other lefty who could make the team as a reliever is Randy Choate. Jan. 3 - 9:52 pm et

We've known all along that we've been looking for a lefty specialist to add to the pen, most likely a veteran. We've all but conceded this year so this signing doesn't surprise me. Plus, Byrnes may not be done addressing the bullpen situation as he could go after a guy like Taveras. Lets wait and see. I think the Joe Jr. comparrison is a little unfair here

I don't have any issue with this signing. It's another low risk high reward situation. At worst he never makes the big league roster and doesn't make much. Best case he can help the big club and still not make much.

If this was last year everyone would be up in arms. This signing makes little sense. You might of already conceded this upcoming year but I have not. The West is the weakest division and is up for grabs. I would like to see them give a guy like Murphy a shot in the bullpen rather than Terry Mulholland. Give the young guys experience.

Um, Murphy will get a shot in the bullpen. If Murphy beats out Mulholland in spring training, he will be in Phoenix to start the year while Muhholland will be either in Tucson or selling insurance. If Mulholland beats out Murphy, then the situation will be reversed. I don't recall anyone being up in arms over Joe Jr. signing has-beens to minor league contracts. It's the long-term lucrative contracts doled out to has-beens that we got pissed about.

Plus, Murphy still can be a decent starter and should have an opportunity to be in the Sidewinders rotation rather than becoming a reliever at the ML with the potential of losing arm-strength since he hasnt had experience as a reliever before....

If this team is looking to the future with young guys, why sign Mulholland? Look at his record the past few years. I doubt he will find the fountain of youth.

I have liked what Josh has done but there are some things I have questioned, including this signing.

The problem the dbacks got in was giving bloated contracts to average or slightly above average players. They don't need to overpay veterans to get them to play here. Muholland can help them in the bullpen. If eh cant they can just let him go. Looke at teh contract Stottlemyre, Bell and Desssens got

Lots of geezers pay to come here and retire.

These over the hill players should play for free.

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks reached a preliminary agreement Tuesday on a minor league contract with much-traveled pitcher Terry Mulholland.

The left-hander, who turns 43 in March, would get an $800,000, one-year contract if added to the 40-man roster. If he makes the team, he likely would be a left-handed specialist.

He was 0-2 last year with the Twins, working 59 innings in 49 games with a 4.27 ERA. He had 15 starts and 24 relief appearances for Minnesota in 2004, going 5-9 with a 5.18 ERA.

In 19 major league seasons, Mulholland has gone 124-142 with a 4.40 ERA while pitching for San Francisco, Philadelphia, the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Seattle, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Minnesota.

I don't know why everyone is upset at this signing. Sure he isn't that good of a pitcher anymore, but it is a minor league contract with one incentive. If he doesn't make the team out of Spring Training then he won't get anywhere near the $800,000. While I do not like the idea of a lefty-specialist (give me a reliever that can just get people out!!), I also think that this goes with the whole idea of low-risk, high-reward players.

Basically they are just tying up Mulhholand's services UNTIL they find a better lefty releiver to beat him out in Spring Training. They aren't guaranteeing him more than minor league contract, of which he'll probably decline if he doesn't make the big club.
