I would really like to just bring attention to the amount of non-descretionary changes that are being made to titles of threads and bodies of threads by the moderators on the board.

The posts that are being made on the board are indexed by Google and are permanently attached to our user names. When our original words are changed by a moderator they cease to be our words but are still reflected to the rest of the world as being so.

I would like to ask that the changing of thread titles and changing of words in threads be banned by admins. I really see no reason for our words to be changed unless it is inflamitory or offensive. There seems to be a real lack of checks and balances by the individuals who have volunteered to moderate.

I understand that this is a privately operated board, but when our words and our identities are being published for the world to see and those words are being altered by others it creates a real conflict of interest for all of us

:stupid:

I've fought this fight before.

I posted a "Crappy Cards Fans Suck" thread after the MNF game because of a few things I witnessed at the game. One or two people misunderstood - thinking I was calling out ALL Cards fans (which is ironic since I'm one of 'em)...the thread was about those Cards fans that are crappy and suck, like the ones I saw involved in fights that night, etc. I said fans should act with class - win or lose. In hindsight, I should have posted it in the Smack Forum, so I had a mod move it there. End of story, right? Nope. Hours, literally days later, another mod saw the thread and freaked out and edited my title to something generic which did not reflect my opinion at all. Once this happened I politely requested that the altered thread be deleted since it was not my title. Seems like a fair request, right? It was rejected. I was told no threads were deleted unless they were spam or porn.

Oddly enough a recent thread regarding some Katie Holmes pics was deleted without any spam or porn in it. Just a discussion on what to do in case of spam by coyoteshockeyfan. I think that thread was started by Linderbee...why was it deleted?

If it can be deleted and not contain any spam or porn, why can my thread - which no longer has my title - not be deleted as well?

I agree with what Ryan said. I also think some moderators are merge-happy. I wonder when this thread will be deleted because from what I understand it's against the rules to criticize moderators in public or ask why someone was banned.

I think yer thread title is too confusing for a specific topic - so I changed it. ;)

The reason it was deleted was two-fold:

1. It was related to a thread about naked Holmes pics in another thread that had been deleted. It wasn't necessary.
2. It went offtopic anyways as you and CoyotesHockeyFan got into it over trivial moderator stuff.

However, I do agree that we need to watch ourselves and not overstep our bounds by changing titles to threads, content of posts, etc.

I do make changes to titles, but usually it's things like mispellings, such as the new Harry Potter book thread, where the name was spelled wrong. I just fixed it.

I guess I havent noticed too much of this, but I think posters are to blame for a lot of sloppiness on the board, ie not looking for existing threads before starting another, obtuse thread titles in reference to a movie or show, etc. Take Sunday for example, do we really need 15 threads all related the Super Bowl?

If you're referring to the poll about who got to see it, it was started by KOC. I didn't even notice it was deleted, but I am surprised to hear it was. Most of the threads in EE could be considered a useless waste of space, and yet somehow most of them survive. I agree that I feel that the thread titles are being changed with more frequency and without (at least to me) need. I remember reading your "crappy cards fans suck" and I was surprised that people took it wrong...but I don't want to get into an English lecture/sentence structure/reading comprehension diatribe. I also can't understand why the thread wasn't deleted, especially since you were the creator. That would almost seem like a courtesy. "Hey, this thread took a seriously wrong turn...can we get rid of it?" I've seen plenty of threads deleted that got out of hand, so I think the reason you were given is b.s.

Anyway, I never really thought about Ryan's point, but it does make sense...just my 2 cents' worth.

Ryan, do you have examples?

The only specific example that I can find is a thread in the AZ diamondbacks forum about the Randy Johnson trade. It was continuously changed (5 times by my count) as the news unfolded then it was closed for reasons I don't know....

http://www.arizonasportsfans.com/vb/showthread.php?t=83927

My concern is, why was the title continuously changed? Those were not the words of the original poster, not even in the least.

Like I said, this gets uploaded into Google for the world to see

Everything in Everything Else is offtopic and unnecessary. If you don't like the direction a thread is going why don't you just lock it. That way people can't see what went on. If someone tries to antagonize by starting a new thread about the locked topic then you can delete.

Some threads aren't appropriate for kids on a forum. Naked pictures of Katie Holmes just leads them to places we shouldn't be directing them to.

That was also part of it.

I agree that the Katie Holmes pic thread should have been deleted. What I talking about was the coyoteshockeyfan/BIM bickering thread. There was no adult content in that thread.

That was related to that thread, so it was taken down...

If someone posts pics of Jenna Jameson, then a second one with a poll about the pics themselves, there is no reason to keep both if you get rid of one.

My only complaint about moderator modifications (related to a specific instance) is that I had no hand in a thread of mine getting a lame title, nor was there any notification that the thread title had changed.

Mods do what mods do and are beholden only to Skorp as far as I'm concerned, but notifications of a change for posters in good standing is a nice touch.

As one of the Dbacks mods I can answer that. The thread title you linked to was only changed once to my knowledge, and that was because the Rotoworld report contained inside turned out to be wrong (which is obviously not the fault of the thread starter). Since it turned out to be incorrect, a mod added the qualifier "was just a rumor" to it so that people that read the title were not confused or mislead by it. At the time, we had three threads open all discussing the same thing, so the decision was made to close the two containing incorrect or outdated information. The last remaining thread was at one point re-titled (although I believe it was done only once and not repeatedly), so that a fourth thread on nearly the same topic would not be necessary.

You should be fired as moderator. I can't believe they "promoted" you.

You are the worst mod ever.
