HoopsHype shows the Suns having a salary structure of $37.1 million. The salary cap is at $43.8 million (give or take). Reports are that Q's contract starts at $5.8 million. But $43.8-$27.1 is $6.7 million.

This doesn't make a lot of sense to me. There is no real point in hanging onto an extra $900,000 if they were thinking of signing someone to a minimum contract. HOWEVER, it could mean that the Suns might do a trade that needed some cap space because the numbers didn't quite match up.

This may be a pointless exercise. I don't know the exact size of Q's contract, but supposedly Nash restructured his deal to make the Q deal work. That suggested that Q would take it right up to the limit.

I think if you look at the entire numbers (carry out the decimal points), it works out to a cool $1 million (or so I'm told).

Hmm, that's an interesting discrepancy. I wonder what the explanation is. It could be that there are some first-year incentives for Richardson that aren't included in the $5.8 million figure, but which are considered "likely" by the league and thus count against the cap.

Hi guys, I lurk here. These are the numbers as I understand them.

Code:
               2005 2006
Marion 12.330 13.700
Eisley 6.375 6.906
Johnson 2.359
Stoudemire 2.032 (2.589)
Voskuhl 1.650 1.800
Cabarkapa 1.313 1.404
Jacobsen 1.082 (1.780)
Lampe 0.912 0.995
Barbosa 0.870 0.931
              28.923 30.105
Nash 8.750 9.625
Richardson 5.832? 6.415
Vroman 0.385
             43.89 46.145

Hmm, that's weird. Hoopshype has a much lower salary for Marion. I wonder who's right?

That's where the bulk of the difference is.

What? Say the name out loud? Then I'd have to kill everyone here.

It's not so important who told it to me, anyway, because recounting the conversation I'm not sure I understood them correctly. I *think* I was told the Suns have $1 mil in cap space, give or take a couple thou. Of course, the way my brain processes information, I'm giving room for my questionable understanding ...

My source for Marion's salary was Patricia Bender's site. Although I've seen different numbers elsewhere she's usually more accurate than most (but not always), and I'm inclined to believe it because the numbers work out. I think it's unlikely that Nash would have been asked to take a pay cut to allow a million dollars cap space, which you're allowed to give a 9+ year veteran any time.

Unless Patricia has another page I'm unaware of, she does not break it down on a year by year basis.

BTW, Nash did not take a pay cut. He simply moved more of his money into year six to reduce the first year amount. Year six is "partly guaranteed", which means he gets some of the money on a delayed basis.

Mike T of the Trib votes for Hoopshype.

The move to sign Richardson will further add to speculation that the Suns will dangle Marion, who has a maximum contract that will pay him $11.3 million in the upcoming season, to land a center.

Kind of funny how he says "The Suns already had signed Steve Nash off the free-agent market, meaning they have acquired what many would consider the top two guards available this summer (outside of Kobe Bryant, who stayed with the Los Angeles Lakers)." The top two guards available, except for the best guard? Why not just say the 2nd and 3rd best guards?

Maybe he gets paid by the word.

Another explanation is that many of us never really felt Kobe was "actually" available. This was certainly true when the Lakers decided to trade Shaq. If the Suns had stayed in the market, they too could have been used by Kobe as leverage with the Lakers. But to say he was actually available may have been a push.
