If Adam Peters wants to sign one more veteran free agent to a short-term deal, who might be a good fit for the Commanders?
There are a few free agents still available who could help the Commanders. However, realistically, at this point, those players may still be available because they are injured, old, or want too much money for their current perceived value. Here is a quick look at some names Commanders fans will recognize who is still out there wanting to sign with an NFL team.
Peters needs to get the roster up to 90, so there is the draft and some undrafted free agents that will follow the draft. So perhaps of those names offered above, Peters may want to sign one more veteran prior to the NFL draft.

- Za'Darius Smith (Edge) 6-4, 270--The Lions surprisingly let Smith go. He will be 33 in September. But with his bigger size than Dante Fowler, he could help against the run, and he still brought home nine sacks last season. It could be that Smith is still wanting starter money, and teams want him to be a rotational, pass-rushing specialist.
- Jedrick Wills (OT) 6-4, 307--Wills was the 10th overall selection by the Browns in 2020. He is available because he was not a good left tackle. Is he available because teams don't think he will be a good right tackle, either? When he has his May birthday, he will still only be 26. Could he be worth signing to see if he can switch to right tackle or inside to guard?
- Brandon Scherff (G) 6-5, 315-- Yes, THAT Brandon Scherff. Hear me out? He is still available. Thus, his value is dropping, and so will his price tag. Sam Cosmi is out for possibly much of the season with a torn ACL. Scherff played right guard (Cosmi's position). If he would agree to a one-year deal, it has "Adam Peters" written all over it.
- Mike Hilton (CB) 5-9, 184--Hilton can play better than Emmanuel Forbes, Michael Davis and Benjamin St-Juste did last year. Hilton just turned 31 early in March. So, if they want to sign one more DB, Peters might give Hilton a short-term deal.
