Dessens, Macias key Mexico win
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- The Culiacan Tomato Growers of Mexico took their solid play from Sunday night and carried it over to Monday against Venezuela, rapping out 11 hits and holding on for a hard-fought 4-3 victory.
Mexico and Venezuela are now 1-1 in the tournament and very much alive for the title.
Arizona Diamondbacks starter Elmer Dessens gave Culiacan seven strong innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out five and not walking a batter, and the Mexican offense did just enough to hold off a late rally by the Aragua Tigers, Venezuelan Winter League champion.
The key hit came in the bottom of the seventh, when Jose Macias hit a sinking line drive that got under the glove of Venezuela left fielder Miguel Cabrera for a two-RBI double. Macias finished the game with three RBIs, and Adan Amezcua had a 3-for-4 night with an RBI for the winners.
Venezuela's Magglio Ordoñez highlighted a 3-for-4 night with a towering solo home run in the top of the seventh
