It's hard to say. You obviously want Shaq to win a title right now. Either this year or next year. He could retire anytime so he's obviously there to win right now.

Gasol is younger and would be around longer but lacks playoff or title experience. Shaq has 4 rings, Gasol had 4 Grizzlies teammates on the court that sucked. So basically if you are wanting to win a title now, Shaq, and if you are looking to give it a few more years to develop a veteran experienced team, Gasol.

I would take Shaq because this team needs to win now if it's ever going to win a title anytime soon. Nash isn't getting any younger.

If the Suns could have got Gasol by giving up as little as the Lakers did, then that is the trade you make.

For the Suns, I would take Shaq. He solves the biggest need we had with our players and system. He enables Amare to be the dominant PF and gives us options when the jump shots aren't falling. Don't think Gasol would fit with the Suns as well.

If I'm the Lakers, I take Gasol. He plays better when he's not supposed to be the #1 guy on the team and he grasps the triangle well.

So basically Boris Diaw and Alando Tucker, plus future draft considerations.

Yeah, I probably make that deal too.

heck, why not both? if you can get gasol for a couple of scrubs then do it. then trade for shaq too. that's like having a big dominant/skilled center with 12 fouls to give (with different approaches in the game). it won't matter now who sits among the bigs (i'll feel bad for skinner though)

If the lakers only had to give up Pat Burke meh I mean Kwame Brown for Gasol then I would rather have Gasol then shaq for the long run, but for the short run win now then shaq is probally the best choice

Gasol would have been perfect for the Suns. He's a versitile young big man that can run the floor and shoot the ball well. He's not as good of a low post defender as Shaq, not many people are, but he's still a serviceable defender. Gasol and Amare would have made a very versitile front court for many years to come in my opinion. Plus the fact that he's younger and cheaper makes Gasol the better option in my opinion.

Big surprise, the Laker fan picked Pau.

He's a POS on defense, though. So he doesn't fix any problems. (Gasol)

We're talking about going back in time and re-doing it, and Gasol was still available..?
I doubt I'd have the balls to pull of a trade for Shaq who was very mediocre this season when the trade occured, and his hip was a question.

So I'd probably say Gasol.

I'd say Gasol for the same reasons Darth Llama stated. And thinking of getting Gasol without giving up Marion is just insane.

The lineup of Nash/Bell/Marion/Gasol/Stoudemire with Hill/Barbosa/Giricek/Skinner on the bench would be good for 70 wins.

But then the Suns don't have the Lakers' luck. I just read the Lakers are 22-5 with Gasol in the lineup. That leaves them with 35-20 without him. That's just about 63% winning percentage and would be good enough for the 7th seed in the west. Great trade.

Could we have gotten Gasol for the trade exception and a player? I think so.

the thing is... I don't know if Gasol would make Amare that much better, and I don't know if he would have made us as physical as we need to be on both ends of the court. Yes it gives us another skilled player, but we have plenty of that. We needed an enforcer, and we got the best enforcer of this generation, albeit the end of his career.

If we are talking a two year period, i do this trade again.

Knowing what we know now...

The trade for Shaq was widely doubted because he was not healthy and old enough no one could be sure he would ever be. It was a huge gamble. Trading for Gasol would have been easier because he's younger and would not have been coming off an injury.

But for this year's playoffs, Shaq is probably more valuable for the Suns. Gasol is not going to do much in trying to stop Duncan nor turn one of the worst rebounding teams in the NBA into one of the better teams.

of course it is. lakers acquiring pau is already too much. you add shaq then that's even more. but that doesn't mean it couldn't have been done if the opportunity falls infront of your door...

but why stop there? sign giri together with sam cassell and pj brown. include korver if there's a spot left. wow...
