I leased a modem for about a year until I realized they were charging me $10.00 a month to use the modem....

I have an extra used cable modem. It came from a client that moved and didn't need it at their new place. It is the same model I use D-link DCM-200.

The one you mention is 11Mbps. The computer I'm thinking about buying has a 54Mbps internal wireless card. I've been told that I should get a 108Mbps router and card.

Is there really a noticeable speed difference? Also, if I were to get that computer with 54Mbps internally, would it make sense to buy a 108Mbps router and an external card that can handle 108Mbps?

The 108Mbps is just a 54Mbps with a doubling technology. Usually you have to have the same brand to get that speed and even then I would be suprised it it ever actually approached it.

With your internal card any 802.11G access point will work fine. I wouldn't worry too much about the 100+Mb stuff unless you are buying the card and AP to match.

If you are mostly surfing the internet the fastest you will probably be downloading is 2-3Mbps anyway. The only time you should notice any difference is when you are downloading or uploading to a computer on the same local network.

The 11Mb stuff is the B technology anf the 54Mb is the G technology. Using a B router and a G card will work fine. It really depends on the deal you get and how important that extra speed is to you. I waited until the price drop on the B stuff and that is what I use now. I don't do much on my home network except shared printing and surfing from the living room with my laptop so that works fine.

For the old computer the USB wireless adapters will work fine but if it is USB v1.0 the max xfer rate will be about 2 Mbps due to the limitations of the USB standard.

I think I had this problem when I was installing my cable modem...couldn't use the USB port because of it or something.

So...do I have a collector's edition? Can I sell it for $1200 or so?

This one is pretty good. I have it running upstairs in my house and I can surf the net flawlessly downstairs from infront of my TV on my laptop. Of couse I had to upgrade the firmware when I got it because it didn't work correctly with my WI-FI card
