Well, when you're rebuilding, you want to rebuild around something.

We have decent starting pitching, some hitting talent, and no bull pen. If we end up with a Gibson-like manager, you're going to want a passionate team. A team that busts its butt to play hard every day.

That means I keep Reynolds and Parra. They are two of the most passionate guys I see.

Talent-wise, you build around Haren and Upton.

Montero has been great, but Snyder is the more vocal of the two in terms of leadership, but your team isn't good enough to keep them both. You move one, but you obviously want more for Montero.

Everyone else can stay or go based on how hard they work and whether or not they buy-in to what the new manager is doing. You must have buy-in with baseball, 162 games is a long time, a lot of that time you're playing hard on faith in what the team is trying to do.

Amazingly, this team doesn't need to blow up to be competitive, it needs to play hard and believe. I'd move the worst attitudes first. For that, I'd need more locker room exposure than I have. Even 1 or 2 of the right players being moved, with a passionate manager could set things up for success next year.

That, and about, 6 new relievers next year, including an older veteran or two to pull the young guys out of their slumps.

God help us if they send off Montero and keep Snyder. Montero is a hell of a left-handed bat in the middle of the order that hits lefties, if he can stay healthy he's a top 3 catcher in the NL.

I'd have to agree with the second paragraph, I really don't think this team is far off at all and doesn't really need to be blown up. If we had a league average pen we'd still be in the playoff hunt. Now if there were some stud prospects sitting in the minor leagues it'd make it a lot easier to ride this season out so hopefully they don't do anything too drastic. Pick up some solid pieces this off-season and this team can compete for the NL West.

I'm not advocating they trade Montero. I really like Montero. But, if the purpose is to give the team its identify back, you can get rid of anyone who isn't a vocal, positive leader type.

You can't give away any talent, you'd have to actually make deals that get talent in return.

Upton and Haren. Then I get rid of the rest. Even Webb.

No team is going to have 25, or 40, vocal positive leader types.

At best, you'd hope to have at least four, one each among the starting llneup, the bench, the starting rotation and the bullpen.

Get rid of anyone who isn't a vocal, positive leader type? No way.

You start by making the change that was way past-due, as just happened. Leaving behind the two most passive Managers, perhaps in the history of Major League baseball, Melvin and Hinch. Who tempered everything they said with "little" this and "little" that. Who said one thing, then did another.

Even Walter Alston, who had 23 consecutive 1-year contracts managing the Dodgers from 1954 to 1976, and who had the personality of a laid-back high school teacher, was strong in his convictions, albeit low-key.

Keep Snyder and get rid of Montero? Snyder batting .239 vs. Montero at.394. Snyder who throws at the 2B eyes to try to catch a base stealer vs. Montero, who puts the throws just in front of the 2B bag where the runner is sliding in.

Snyder with the personality of a drill instructor vs. Montero who is always smiling.

Priorities, man, priorities.

Absolutely, I just don't see a situation where we could get equal return on Montero and make it worth it to have Snyder as our #1.

I don't see anyone on our roster who has any trade value to the point where they'd be worth shipping off. We have Upton, Montero, Young, and Reynolds who I'd say are what you build around offensively and hang onto. Then who do you have left to trade? Drew? His value isn't great right now and it wouldn't be worth losing our starting SS for some mid-level prospect or journey-man reliever. Then you have Laroche, K Johnson, and Snyder who are players that are definitely expendable but won't yield anything significant in return.

Haren is our most valuable trading commodity and if we could land two prospects it could be worth dealing. Overall the Diamondbacks are really stuck in a poor situation with untradable players, and players who don't really have much value. I'd say if a decent offer comes up make a move but I think this team is going to have to improve through the draft and some savvy free agent moves.
