I never really minded when people got mad at me if I predicted losing seasons. No one likes to lose. In fact, of all the people about whom that is true, Dennis Green probably tops the list. Yet here the Cards stand, 0-3 and the fans are already rising up in anger and Green is clearly frustrated.

I can’t say I’m surprised by the result. I said 1-4 was the likely status going into the open week. What I am surprised about is the angry response the Cards’ fans have shown towards these losses. It looks like the local media is joining in as well. I am reminded of what Steve Martin used to say, “Well excuuuuse me!” Apparently I was the only one not expecting the Cards to march straight to the Super Bowl.

As I have seen the first three games go by I have watched the Cards lose three close games. If I recall last season correctly, you could have turned any of the road games off by the end of the first quarter. They had clearly ceased to be entertaining. Anyone turn off any of this year’s road games? Lest we forget, the Rams game was the first game for a new offensive line, a new offensive co-coordinator and a new head coach. It was the quarterback’s fourth NFL start if I am counting correctly. A loss was not surprising. In week two, the Cards lost to a team that has won seemingly every game they have played this century. Then the Cards got to travel to Atlanta and play another undefeated team headed by the most dangerous offensive player in the game. “Piece of cake, right?”

Could we for once try to “get real.” The team lost its top receiver, top running back, starting safety, and several others, so most teams would have struggled (see Cleveland). I, for one, am happy to be in a position to win games near their end of those games. Most teams have to learn to take that last step and it usually takes some time. How are those miracle Bengals doing this season? If doing what the Pats did is so easy, why hasn’t everyone else done it? Most last to first scenarios are a fluke. The Cards have gone for non-competitive to competitive and I find that a reasonable advance.

As for Green, I tried to warn he had underestimated the problem. Expect him to be more frustrated until Boldin gets up to speed. That won’t happen in Boldin’s first game back, but it will happen.

McCown has played well for the most part. Would I have pulled him from the last game? No, I would not have. However, if that breaks his spirit, he wasn’t the right guy in the first place. Green was making the same point he made to Culpepper and I’ll take a QB like him any day.

Despite getting beaten here and there, I like Davis at left tackle. He made an awesome play in the last game where he knocked his rusher out of the play, slid to his right and took out another guy. Sadly, by then the entire right side of the line had collapsed and McCown was running for his life.

Wells has been decent and Stepanovich looks like a player who could develop. Clement and Spikes have been terrible. Jones has not risen to Green’s challenge. Instead of being a key target, he has mostly been a 5 yard receiver. As for blocking, I don’t expect him to cleanly handle every defensive end, but it would be nice if he could slow them down a little. He should have a couple of them on his TV spot. That way he would get close enough to them to see what they looked like, as he seems to have trouble recognizing them in a game. Twice in the Atlanta game it looked like he didn’t even touch the guy he was assigned to block.

Fitzgerald has been solid, but he has also been blanketed in all three games. Smith has been better than I expected, but no one could run consistently behind this line. Williams actually looked like a receiver in the last game. I’d still rather see Poole, but his injury may be limiting playing time.

As a whole the defense is playing well, though it’s easy to see why Ohalete was available. I am especially pleased with Macklin who seems to be the real deal. They need to keep the top 3 corners healthy, as Tate would appear to have little left in the tank. I have no idea how Stone is still on an NFL roster. However, beware of getting too confident. They will get blown out one day when the turnovers don’t go their way. They still lack line talent.

Finally, I think Green has done as good a job as I had hoped he would do. The playoffs were always a fantasy, but a team should aim high. He has never had so little with which to work and he’s frustrated. However, I rather be frustrated and in the games, than frustrate and having the team quit on the coach, like it did last year. Give him time and Green will get the job done. I am astonished Green is taking so much heat.

As for this week’s game, I picked the Cards, but they will have to play their best game of the year and they will have to have a running game. If they can stay close again, it’s about their turn to have on fall into the win column.

Harry,

I think you have articulated the way many of us feel very nicely. In terms of underestimating the calibre of talent Green inherited, I'm sure that his biggest surprise was the O-Line.......yet he doesn't seem terribly interested in making the moves that might help.....I'm thinking specifically of the Shelton situation. He has to accept some of the blame by using Kendall as his whipping boy. In hindsight, it would have made more sense to use Fred Jones for this role.

I really think we'd be further ahead right now if the O-Line consisted of Shelton; Davis; Wells; Kendall and Clement in whatever positions semed to make the most sense.

Put that on the front page. Harry, you're able to say what many of us are thinking, but can't put into tangible words. Good job, bud

The only huge concern, IMO, is Josh McCown. He HAS to learn how to throw the ball away, and he HAS to learn to look to pass first. If he doesn't do these things, we'll be watching Rob Johnson, part deux.

Great post, Harry

The thing I'm shocked about is how differently I thought we'd be failing. I thought ( at least bfore Shipp and Q got hurt) , that we would be losing games 35 to 27.
The defense is playing MUCH better than I would have ever thought and is the main reason we are starting to get SOME respect. We cetainly have been weak against te run, but we rank near the top in turnovers, passing yards allowed and points allowed... and that comes against 3 pretty good teams.
Green inherited a train wreck, which many of us understood and accepted early on. We have reached a point where I believe Green has the train back on the track ( ahead of schedule as far as I'm concerned) and the train looks as if it may be ready to pull out of the station.
You are right about 1 thing for sure Harry. I've been up and down off my couch, screamin and cheering more in these first 3 weeks than I did the entire season.

Excellent post, Harry. I'm glad I got season tickets as they are becomming fun to watch and will be a playoff team when the new stadium opens in 2006.
As far as the press goes; I'm not surprised and Denny has some of the blame on this.
I've always been a big DG fan but have felt that he should be more media friendly. He just doesn't trust them and never has. So be it.

Spank...

If Kendall was his whipping boy, he'd have brought him to camp... whipped him... and cut him.

He got rid of him before because, evidently, he viewed him as a guy who wasn't buying into the program, and, thus, could prove disruptive.

Recall... that Raynoch was called into the office and had to convince Green that he wanted to be part of his vision for the team.

I wouldn't br surprised that at one point there was a little face to face with Kendall that didn't convince Green that it was worth the headache, keeping him around.

I agree with most everything you said, but I have to agree with Stout, I'm still not convinced that Josh is the answer for us at QB and I still would like to see us draft a good one.

Awesome post as always Harry. The biggest difference between 2003 and 2004 is that we are prepared to play each game so far. We are also not afraid to make adjustments after the half, something I believe Mac and his staff was deficient in.

I might say Wells has been above average.

Freddie Jones (sorry Freddie!) is looking like a serious candidate for some bench time.

As to McCown, I agree it's early to say absolutely he is the solution. However, I still like his chances. He's mobile, can make all the throws and seems reasonably tough physically. It takes getting hit, getting benched and getting intercepted before most QB's learn to do things like throw the ball away. It's also hard to criticize a QB for not hanging in the pocket, when there is no pocket. Until the line gets better, McCown will continue to be hard to evaluate.

As to that line, Kendall would not have played enough better than Stepanovich to make a difference. I noticed the Sporting News rated Stepanovich the third best offensive rookie based on his performance so far. I wouldn't go that far, but he has played extremely well for a first year starter, especially considering how weak the play is to his right. As to Shelton, I think Green is waiting for him to hit bottom. When Shelton gets there, Green will play him and see if he has more appreciation for his position and the team. Shelton was given a sizeable contract and then shows up not as part of the solution, but as part of the problem. Graves and the previous administration treated Shelton far better than his play merited, so it was no surprise Shelton wasn't "real world." Hopefully, he'll take it like a man and try to help the team. If not, look for the O-line to be the number one focus of free agency.

We are what we are. This week, a team that followed close losses to two very good teams to a game where it held the "Michael Vick Juggernaught" to 2 FG's, but lost the game, because it committed the kind of blunders young teams are prone to commit.

That's who we are going into the NO game.

Coming out of the NO game, I am hoping that the defense proves "it is what it is" by continuing to play at the same high level and that special teams reverts to the way it played vs. New England. That should get us to a point where we are at least even or better.

Then, all we will need from the offense are (a) fewer mistakes (b) a semblance of a running game, (c) a little bit more time for McCown and (d) extending our 20 yard line to 20 yard line productivity all the way to the NO end zone.

I think this team will be a lot better than what we have seen on offense very soon. I still think we can win eight games this year with the schedule we have.

My take from before the season began was we just did not have enough quality players to compete. You cannot expect much from rookies no matter how good they are. I had seen enouhg of McCown to have serious doubts about him. All I remember was the hail mary pass at the end of last season. Other than that nothing about him indicated to me he would be our next good QB. I am not supprised or distrubed about where we are.

I am distrubed that Dennis Green gave indications that this team could be something this year it could not and we would somehow have a good record. He compounds this by naming Smith and McCown as starters before training camp and has stuck with it. Any sensiable coach would have let everyone compete for their jobs as none of these guys had performed at a level last year that merited them being named as the starters. DG has to know the fans did not just fall off a turnip truck so whay make such outlandish claims?

Hope something good happens today.

The Cardinals have long had a bad habit of paying players based on their talent level and production compared to the rest of the Cardinals roster rather than the rest of the NFL.
