Hi,

Several months ago, my 20" Intel Imac that I purchased new in May 2006 went Ka-put. It seems (from research I did at the time), that the hard drive took a dump on me.

I have a macbook and a friend of mine knows a manager at Apple store and he was supposed to look into how much it would run to have it fixed at the store, so it wasn't really a priority. Time went by, he never got a solid answer for me so my IMac has been sitting in the spare bedroom gathering dust for about 7 months now.

Anyways, I have been thinking of just buying a hard drive and replacing it myself, but it looks like it might be a pain.

I tried to call the Apple store to see how much they charge but they have an automated deal that doesn't let you talk to anyone and I have been too lazy to go down to the store and talk to them about it (lol).

So I looked up the istore online on Val Vista and US 60 at Dana Park and called them. They said I could buy my own hard drive and they could replace it at 90 dollar per hour (said it's usually about an hour and a half to do, so about $135 to replace).

Anyways, that seems like the best option for me right now. I was wondering if anyone else had tried doing it themselves or had know of anywhere else I should shop around at?

I am also considering picking up Leopard from ASU at a discounted price of $69.00. If anyone has Leopard, is it even worth it?

I've also been debating on what size and brand of Hard Drive to go with. I have a 1TB external and a few 300+ GB's laying around.

I had a 250 GB before, but that really wasn't enough. I was thinking of going with a 1TB internal but not sure if that slows things up or not. I plan on buying the Hard Drive from Newegg as I have always purchased my electronics from them online.

Yeah, I saw that and thought I would just do it myself, but I think that the Intel Imac's are a bit different. Here is a video I found but I'm thinking I'd rather just pay a professional to do it.

Wow, a lot of work to replace a HD. Doesn't look TOO bad, but still pretty wierd that Apple made a HD replacement so hard to do. You would think they would design it like a laptop with a removable panel on the back covering just the HD. HD's generally wear out long before the rest of the machine, seems odd that they didn't allow easier access to it. I have never seen anyone have to disassemble an entire system before just to get to the HD.
