No I’m not talking about trying to win with Stanton. This season is already a disaster so there’s nothing impending about this season. The impending disaster refers to trying to fix this roster in one offseason.

Let’s start with what can’t be changed regardless of player evaluation. These are the contracts that are so bad or so recent cutting these players would devastate the salary cap. So even if you wanted to cut a guy like Gresham (and boy do I) the contract is so toxic the Cards can’t cut him without hurting their rebuild efforts. This contract still astonishes me. I remember slamming it at the time though several on the board actually defended it. I can’t allow myself to believe SK is that bad a judge of talent so I presume this was to appease Palmer. Ironic that next year he’ll likely be gone but the Cards are stuck with Gresham. Other non-cuttable contracts include TM, Nkemdiche, Jones (I know no one would cut him)and Chad Williams who would cost a small amount. The other recent signees with non-cuttable contracts are Reddick and Baker.

Everyone else has to earn their keep. What scares me most is the total number of positions underperforming or heading for free agency. Starting at the back of the defense. Branch would likely stay but he’d want at least the $2 million he’s making this year. This brings us to the TM/Baker conundrum. I was confused by his selection. Since you can’t cut TM, where does Baker play? He’s too light to replace Branch and though a willing tackler he’d wear down quickly playing regularly in the box. He’s also shorter & lighter than Bethea. The Cards would save $2 mil if you think he can replace Bethea. He likely would have an adjustment period to being the last line of defense. The Cards have several now meaningless games to try out Baker if they want to know what they’ve got.

Looking next at the CBs, beyond Peterson does anyone get you excited? Assuming Bethel is old news and T Williams is too old, what’s left? Does anyone think B Williams is still a developing CB? Make that 3 more to be acquired unless you think Ford is one of them. Ironically the only one of the dead weight CBs under contract is B Williams. At least they’ll gain 150K cap space when he’s cut.

Moving to linebacker. Dansby’s contract is up and he won’t be re-signed. Buc’s contract for 2018 could be and should be cut, adding nearly $9 mil of cap space. At his size I think Reddick is better suited to the $LB spot, but that position may not even exist if Bettcher is gone. Reddick seems better suited to some sort of outside LB position. I can’t believe he holds up inside unless he bulks up. Martin is a serviceable spot player. Markus Golden is big enough to play inside. I know others have a higher opinion of his rush capabilities, I’d rather see him inside. I would at least want to experiment with him. Wright & Bynes are the 2 designated remaining LBs. Neither is an impact player, so if the names change there will likely be marginal impact.

Turning to the line I guess we can all hope Nkemdiche becomes more of an impact player. Just being routinely available would be a good start. I won’t waste time on I told you so, but the idea he can replace CC should now be set aside. If the above change wasn’t enough consider this. For the 2018 season the only other signed defensive linemen are Mauro and Gunter. I don’t know about the Cards impression but while Mauro was a good standout last year, his play has been mediocre in my opinion this season. This year he’s the highest paid member of that line beside Nkemdiche. The rest of the line is made up of SK’s acquired castoffs. It’s amazing they held up this long. They can likely thank the departed Mr. Campbell for that. Some of them can be re-signed, but none of them brings Campbell’s presence or leadership. That is what SK must find if he wants to fix this line. Until they get that leader, either by word or example, that line doesn’t get better. This franchise has always undervalued leadership.

It’s possible if there is a major coaching change this relatively clean slate could allow the new DC to select his own unit. Still if I’m right without even performance based changes the Cards need 2 safeties (1 just a backup), 3 CBs, 2-3 LBs and at least 3 DLs. If your thinking that’s most of the defense, you’re right. Scared yet?

Just for the fun of it you’d better add in a place kicker which will add 2.5 mil to the working capital.

I’ll look at the offense next, but I must add this is the largest rebuild I’ve ever seen.

This team is looking a lot like swiss cheese. Holes everywhere. Harry you are spot on with the defense and the sad part is the offense has just as many holes if not more. They need Palmer, Fitz, and Iupati to retire so have cap space to sign a bevy of free agents to fill holes because they don't have enough draft choices to even begin sealing the leaks. Add to that Keim's draft record the last couple years and most of the patches will start leaking again. The reality is either Bidwill or Keim have to take charge and not allow Arians to have much of a say in who gets drafted and who gets signed out of free agency. If Arians continues to have substantial influence then all bets are off.

So basically it’s looking next year like:
Nkemdiche-Open-Open
Golden-Reddick-Bucannon-Jones
Peterson-Open-Mathieu
Open-Baker

Don’t think Mathieu and Bucannon are going anywhere

We have David Johnson, Chandler Jones and PP... and that's about it for difference makers on the team going into next year.

Not ONE great, much less GOOD player on the O AND D lines... nothing at WR assuming Larry retired... eh, I'm not even going to finish this post. Too depressing.

It might be easier to see who is left under contract on D and their cap hit for 2018:

OLB - C. Jones $15.5M
CB - P. Peterson $15M
S - T. Mathieu $14M
$LB - D. Bucannon $8.7M
S - A. Bethea $4.9M
DE - J. Mauro $3.3M
ILB - H. Reddick $3M
DT - R. Nkemdiche $2.3M
S - B. Baker $1.5M
OLB - M. Golden $1.2M
DT - R. Gunter $832K
CB - B. Williams $824K
ILB - S. Wright III $630K
S - R. Ford $590K

You have a couple of pieces in place depending on the D being run next year but clearly a ton of holes left to fill.

It might be easier to see who is left under contract on D and their cap hit for 2018:

OLB - C. Jones $15.5M - Legit OLB who can get to the QB.
CB - P. Peterson $15M - Top CB who probably isn't going to want to go through a rebuild.
S - T. Mathieu $14M - A shell of who he was. No longer anything special.
$LB - D. Bucannon $8.7M - Not a safety and not a LB. Just a guy.
S - A. Bethea $4.9M - How much longer can he hold up?
DE - J. Mauro $3.3M - A lunch bucket guy who doesn't have a lunch in the bucket.
ILB - H. Reddick $3M - Too light to play either inside or outside. Could end up like Bucannon.
DT - R. Nkemdiche $2.3M - Well on his way to Bust City.
S - B. Baker $1.5M - A lighter version of Mathieu.
OLB - M. Golden $1.2M - High effort player who needs someone good along side him to be effective.
DT - R. Gunter $832K - Pedestrian
CB - B. Williams $824K - Waste of a third round pick.
ILB - S. Wright III $630K - Slower than a model T Ford.
S - R. Ford $590K - Just a guy at this point.
This is scarier than Halloween. You can't even find 11 quality players out of this bunch to start.

Cutting TM now would cost way over $10 mil in dead money. It costs less to keep him. I don’t think they keep Buc at $9mil

The Cardinals would be wise to switch over to a 4-3 base. reason #1: Chandler Jones is a 43 DE. Reason #2: Haason Reddick is a 43 WOLB.

For players who should be back, here's what it looks like on paper:

LDE Markus Golden
LDT Robert Nkemdiche
RDT TBA (Rodney Gunter/Xavier Williams/Olsen Pierre)
RDE Chandler Jones

SOLB TBA
MLB TBA
WOLB Haason Reddick

LCB Patrick Peterson
SS Budda Baker (I think he'll be very good here after a year in the weight room)
FS Antoine Bethea (Rudy Ford)
RCB TBA

The contracts that need to be resolves (one way or another):

1. S/CB Tyrann Mathieu ($14.1M 2018 cap figure)---needs to take a pay cut, or they won't give him his #3M roster bonus in March. This is the year to move on, if that's what the Cardinals elect to do.
2. LB Deone Bucannon---can't justify an $8.7M 5th year option salary---but maybe they can re-sign him to a fair deal with incentives. In a 4-3 he can play SOLB, although he's not ideal for that role. Too small to play the middle.
3. DT Josh Mauro---is due $3.3M next year, of which the Cardinals can save $2.8M if they release him.

2018 Free Agent Fits:

RDT: Stephon Truitt
MLB: Zach Brown
SOLB: Nigel Bradham
RCB: Patrick Robinson

Interesting angle... we may be ahead of ourselves, but who on the open market would be a good fit to run a 4-3 scheme?

Yet they couldn't keep Swearinger? Hard to figure this team. Overpay and then pass up bargains.

Yep this defense has turned into a complete dumpster fire! No attitude, no nastiness & it all starts with the DC. Pat P throwing children tantrums after each TD, Badger going thru the motions, etc.

I agree with Mitch that the personnel left better suits the 4-3.

My problem with how Keim built this defense is he relied too much on undersized Swiss Army knives at safety & LB after success turning Buc & the Badger into solid players & he's trying to go that route again with guys in Budda & Reddick. All 4 of these players are limited somewhat with their skill sets.

It's crazy how bad & how fast this defense has imploded before our very eyes.

The effort of 98% of this defense is laughable

I know it's not popular but the Cards need to try and trade PP. Maybe pick up a 2nd or a 3rd for him. They are going to have to start from scratch with the roster that Keim has built only a few have any trade value. Mauro shouldn't even be on the roster at all after his performance yesterday but Keim has left the coaches in a very desperate situation with his decisions over the past few years.

And what, put two guys like bethel and Williams out there? Trading our Superstars in their prime isn't going to make us better

Peterson is a generational talent and still young. You should get 2 first-rounders for him. This is the worst post ever.

Agreed.

You don't trade PP, Jones or DJ. They're LITERALLY the ONLY building blocks this team has!

Agreed.

Once thing to note, if we are talking about rebuilds, and large contract that the Cardinals are stuck with, then I do not see how letting Calias Campbell go was a bad thing. Campbell is on a great defense surrounded by talent with the Jags, and that is allowing him to cut it loose, and we see the results.

I do not think that would have been the case here, and we would be left with a 30 year old tackle with a huge contract.

Also, it was nice to read something about the $LB position going away with Betcher, one could only hope.

Supposedly was not good in the locker room, or at least that was the rumor.

Funny, since I am not sure what they have now is showing much more.

Yet, I am with you, I would have like to see Swearinger resigned.

Swearinger just exposed on MNF in both run support and coverage. He just shined because of our then elite defense. Oh how I miss those days...

Can you all finally stop with that $LB nonsense? Buc is playing the LILB spot in our 3-4 defense just like any 3-4 ILB in the league. The $ sign stems from his college days as a safety. It's really ridiculous. Buc is on the lighter side of LBs but honestly most starting LBs these days are in the low 230s. Buc looks like 220-230 right now and finally healthy showing his playmaking ability again.

I believe we would need a pass-rusher on the ground for a top pick along with a qb. The first pick should go with a qb of course. After Jackson/Rosen, we should go with the best rusher left on the board. I would trade up to the bottom half of the first round for him. Use the next picks for linebacker/tackle/cb in no particular order. THis is depending on who we pick up in FA of course.
