Plot Summary: Academy Award-winning writer/director Martin McDonagh takes audiences on a killingly funny trip In Bruges, which is world-premiering as the opening-night film of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.

Mr. McDonagh makes his feature directorial debut on the film, from his own original screenplay. His plays (which include "The Lieutenant of Inishmore" and "The Pillowman") have brought him two Olivier Awards and four Tony Award nominations. He wrote and directed "Six Shooter," starring Brendan Gleeson, which earned him the 2006 Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short Film.

"In Bruges" was filmed on location; Bruges (pronounced "broozh"), the most well-preserved medieval city in the whole of Belgium, is a welcoming destination for travellers from all over the world. But for hit men Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson), it could be their final destination; a difficult job has resulted in the pair being ordered right before Christmas by their London boss Harry (two-time Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes) to go and cool their heels in the storybook Flemish city for a couple of weeks.

Very much out of place amidst the gothic architecture, canals, and cobbled streets, the two hit men fill their days living the lives of tourists. Ray, still haunted by the bloodshed in London, hates the place, while Ken, even as he keeps a fatherly eye on Ray's often profanely funny exploits, finds his mind and soul being expanded by the beauty and serenity of the city.

But the longer they stay waiting for Harry's call, the more surreal their experience becomes, as they find themselves in weird encounters with locals, tourists, violent medieval art, a dwarf American actor (Jordan Prentice) shooting a European art film, Dutch prostitutes, and a potential romance for Ray in the form of Chloë (Clémence Poésy), who may have some dark secrets of her own.

And when the call from Harry does finally come, Ken and Ray's vacation becomes a life-and-death struggle of darkly comic proportions and surprisingly emotional consequences.

I saw it tonight, thought it was a fantastic movie. I went with a girl I went to college with, also a history teacher, was nice to have an intelligent conversation after a movie. I usually get pinned as the cynic in my friend, only because I don't think that flashy special effects make a movie good just because they are in there.

Is it subtitled? I've put it on my queue (and regardless of the answer I'll watch it), but I need to be in the right mood for foreign film.

Do you require subtitles for Irish/English accents? Real question, some times they are necessary.

We almost saw this recently, but we decided it was too cold to go.

Glad you liked it...still my favorite movie of the year so far.
Agreed. Might be one of my favorites of all time. Maybe. I'm still thinking on it...I just watched it last night. Part of my opinion might still be clouded by the fact that I went into it with absolutely no expectations.

Excellent movie! I wonder if this is the first film Martin McDonagh (sp?) wrote and/or directed. He's an incredible with the stage, and most of his plays are dark humor just like this one.

I was pumped to see this because I have heard nothing but good things. It wasn't bad but it seemed to drag quite a bit. Maybe its just me.

Great great movie. Yet another movie I liked better than Slumdog this year.

Strange that I liked the jokes about Americans.

This was some of the funniest dialogue I can remember.

Colin Farrell and the other Irish guy were spot on.

Very good. Farrell and Gleeson were outstanding.

My one gripe was the scene with Gleeson and the Russian. That whole 'alcove' thing felt contrived, like the writer was trying to be too clever, a la Tarantino.

This film definitely should have won for Best Original Screenplay instead of Milk.

With Taratino, that scene lasts 30 minutes.
