was your Dad a Cardinals fan? Did he "show you the right path" and put you on an endless road of following the Big Red? My old man did. We'd pack up the car on an early sunday morning and drive 2 hours up to Busch Stadium with our tickets. We had 2 season tickets, so between my brothers and me, I got to go to maybe 3 a year. But my dad always made sure I got to watch the cowboy games - because I HATED the cowboys - even at such a young age. We'd take up warm coats and a hot thermos of hot chocolate and sit in that god-awful stadium with that horrible turf and cheer em on. man, i'd love to cheer a lomax to roy green touchdown with my dad. he's almost 70 now, and one day whenever i have any money i'd love to take him to the new stadium in glendale and see a game with him. and one day, yes one day, we'll win it all!

My dad hated all forms of sports. As a mechanic his love was, and still is, NHRA racing. Whatever.

My Grandmother taught me how to love baseball (she the Braves and me the Cubs and later the Diamondbacks). I learned how to bat not from Pops, but from Ryne Sandberg (right) and Mark Grace (left).

My boy D-Dogg taught me how to become a die hard Lakers (2002) and Cardinals (1999) fan. Now I bleed purple, forum blue, and red (what a mix) and love my teams and will defend them to the bitter end.

I can't wait for the day when I can teach little A-Bomb how to throw a curve, shoot free throws or make the tackle and give 'em the opportunities my dad had no interest in giving. Future good times.

You know your kid just might be more interested in top fuelers and 1/4 mile times! I believe that auto racing is considered a sport...

Dissin' your father because he had different interests is low. :nono:

I am almost guaranteed my kid won't like what I like, but the difference is I will attempt to embrace them and encourage them. It wasn't the different interests I was dissing, but rather my pop's unwillingness to do something for the A-Bomb, like drive me 15 min to Little League (never did) or ensure I saw a pro game before the age of 22 (didn't).

Dad was my football coach, and an all around superstud athlete. All my life our house lived for football weekends. my games on friday, college on saturday, and pro on sunday. I never had a home town team until i moved here, and now that i do have one (hell, i have all major sports covered now!) i'm a die hard.

my dad and i were at the last game in St. Louis in '87 vs the Giants. i remember seeing someone holding a sign that read: where are the cards going? a. jacksonville b. baltimore c. phoenix. i wanted to puke and vowed to never follow them again. we were bitter! but then i went to asu and couldn't help it. i remember boomer's 522 yard game like it was yesterday and the birds flew again.

I took my Dad to a couple of Cards home games after my Mom passed away in 1998. He remarked the last time he saw the then "Chicago" Cardinals was at Comiskey Park & he thought it was against the Eagles. Well I know he said something to the effect of "Same old Cardinals" after the game. But I think he had a good time. I can't remember if that was his last football game or not...

My Dad was a Giant fan. But we went to Giant games together.

My Dad, a friend, my brother and I would meet Sunday mornings at the Madison Delicatessin (Madison and 86th) for salami omelets and lox & bagels while the guy behind the counter made up a batch of roast beef sandwiches to take to the game. We'd then hoof it over to the Lexington Ave. subway and take it up to Yankee Stadium to watch the game.

During those years, the Cardinals lost more of those games than they won. And during those years, Dad would always commiserate with me and ask: "Are you still sitting shiva for that football team?"

But mostly, he loved good football.

He was a sportsman who - like Forrest Gump - "was there" when Louis knocked out Schmelling, when Cecil Isbell pivoted around the goalpost to make a one-handed catch on a ball thrown by Don Hutson and with me when Ameche scored the TD to beat the Giants in "the greatest game ever played."

And he was always there on the sidelines proudly watching his son (who was not a great football player) compete on the field.

I miss him.

(Note - When someone in a Jewish family dies, the family receives visitors in their home for a week after the funeral. This custom is called "sitting shiva").

My dad (with an X-Mas gift from my mom) brought me to my first Cardinals game - it was vs the Giants (he's from NY  ) and it was that day that I became a true Cardinals fan.

I'm such a daddy's girl - and I'm really thankful for the times we had watching baseball/football together when I was little.

Happy (early) Father's Day to all you dad's and future dad's out there.

I had three sons that I tried to raise as Cardinal fans but the oldest two could have cared less about football. My youngest son loved to sit and watch the games with me by asking the question I dreaded to fear: "Who are you votin for pop?" I would sigh, and say the Cards and he would crack that big grin of his and say, "Good, I'm votin for the other team," and then laugh when I would get frustrated and turn off the game. We still watch our games together along with his two sons, we're all getting older now, but he's a Giant fan, and I'm still a Card fan. At least I don't turn the game off anymore, as life is too short to swaet the small stuff.

My boy was born in February, already has a few cards jumpers. I can't wait to show him the true meaning of sports. Always try, never give up. Even if things look their roughest, you've got to give it all you've got. You never know how good it can be in the future if you don't try now. go cards. and happy 1st father's day to those like myself.

My dad was a Chiefs fans, but he would root for the cards as long as they didn't play the chiefs. He passed away 2 years ago and he was really starting to become a cards fans because of my 2 kids. He hated to see us after we came home from another home loss. My son is as die hard as I am. In fact the first year we moved to Wisconsin we went to the cards packers game. When walking into the stadium they were giving away a towel that said Lambeau field cards Vs Pack Jan. 2, 1999. He reached his hand out to take if from the girl and then pulled his hand back when he saw the green bay logo on it and said "I ain't touching that". It fell to the ground. It was the funniest thing I ever saw.

We lived in Chicago....

and every Sunday my Dad would pull the old Zenith radio out and try oh so hard to pull the game in on KMOX. One problem was the fact that the Moody Bible institute frequency was so close that the game would fade in and out. At half time he get a football and throw passes to me in the back yard. He eventually upgraded to a Zenith trans oceanic radio and every now and then they would broadcast the Cards game on the Arm Forces network on the short wave band. Usually when they were playing the Giants. It would come in clear as a bell. He was in heaven!
I was to young to remember exactly how old I was when he started taking me to St. Louis with my 2 uncles for 1 or 2 games a year. We would leave on Saturday mornings and spend a the night at a hotel. We'd leave for home right after the game, usually complaining about the loss while we listened to the post game show until the car radio reception would fade out. I got to see guys play like Pat Fisher, Jackie Smith, Billy Gambrell, Bobby Joe Conrad and Larry Wilson. I was at the famous Mel Gray TD catch/non catch vs Washington. I saw O.J. Andersons tremendous first game against Dallas.
When I got older, many times my Dad and I would hop in the car and drive south past Kankakee to rent a motel because we found out that the Champaign TV feed was broadcasting the Cards game and we could watch it.
The Cards played the Bears in many exhibition games at Soldier Field. After 1 particular game we waited outside by the team bus and met Dan Dierdorf. He was so nice. He talked to us for a half an hour or so. Told us that day that the rookie Dan Hampton would soon be an All-Pro.
Yes, My Dad "cursed " me with this passion for my beloved Big Red. Thats ok, cause I passed it along to my son. Last year we went to the game when the Cards came to Chicago. My goofy kid bought 8 or 10 eight foot long red feathered boas. He pinned them to a hooded sweatshirt, painted his face red, yellow, and black. He literaly looked like the San Diego chicken with a terrible sunburn! Their fans were all over us. NFL Films and Fox both came up to him for close up shots. A Cardinal player came over before the game(i don't know who it was. He was in sweats), and told him, "anybody that dedicated deserves something!", and then threw him an official pro football which "Q" then autographed for him! Of coarse the Cards went on to lose 28-3. Near the end of the game the entire south endzone of fans were chanting "PLUCK THAT BIRD-PLUCK THAT BIRD!!! I'll never forget that day.

My Dad passed away in 81' at the too young of age of 66. He would often say how he was running out of time on this earth for the Cards to produce a Championship team. We would laugh about that. Now I'm 50 and I say to my son, " I hope I get to see the Cards in a Super Bowl in my time!"

I would give anything to watch 1 more game with my Dad.

Happy Fathers Day, Dad. I know you're still watching. I hope you got good seats where you are.

My Dad was a Green Bay fan, albeit not a rabid one. He appreciated the excellence of the Lombardi years. He was a Cardinals fan also, mainly because he liked the baseball Cardinals and so became a football Cardinals follower as well. When they moved here, Dad and I became true Cards fans because they were now OUR team.

Dad suffered with me through the first 3 or 4 seasons before cancer took him in 1991. That last summer and beginning of the 1991 campaign were the last we were able to share on this earth. He passed away on my birthday, September 25th of that year, yet we enjoyed the pre-season games even in the midst of his pain. I remember him sitting in his recliner watching one game as they fumbled and bumbled their way and he just shook his head sadly, being too sick to even comment at the time. A few short weeks later and he was gone.

We went to just a couple of games in those years because money wasn't all that plentiful. But, I remember days of autumn, holidays and Cardinal football as some of the best of times in what would be my final few years with Dad. He left far too soon at just barely 60 years old and I miss him more today than I did 13 years ago when he went on to be with the Lord.

My sons and I still watch the Cards every time they are on TV and listen to them on the radio when they aren't. We had a great time when we got season tickets a few years ago before economics dictated that the money be paid to bills and other things. Maybe one day we can get them again and be able to root them on in person :)

Sorry to wax so nostalgic but I remember days of long ago, Jimmy Hart slinging the ball all over the place and Air Coryell entertaining Dad and me as we sat in our little living room hoping, just hoping they would kick Dallas' ass one more time...

Peace all!

My dad's Russian and could give two craps about football. He's on the Chambers of Commerce Embassador's board in Flagstaff so he did the golfing thing last year with the Cardinals. I asked him who he played with and he answered " two gigantic black fellows." He wouldn't shut up about how big they were, but couldn't remember what their names were. I'm sure whoever they were couldn't wait for the game to end.
