BLOOMINGTON — Indiana football landed a verbal commitment from Maryland linebacker Kellan Wyatt on Tuesday afternoon, according to multiple reports.
Wyann entered the transfer with the Terps in the midst of spring practice. He led the team with 7.5 tackles for loss last season.
He was a former 3-star prospect out of Archbishop Spalding, a well-respected outside of Baltimore, in the 2022 signing class with other offers from Syracuse, Liberty and UMass. He emerged as an immediate contributor for the Terps as a true freshman.

Indiana’s early focus in the portal has been at defensive end where it was lacking any veteran presence behind Mikal Kamara. The Hoosiers first two signings (Wyatt and Kent State transfer Stephen Daley) in the spring portal have been focused on addressing that issue.
It’s entirely possible IU sophomore defensive ends Mario Landino or Daniel Ndukwe still end up ahead of them on the depth chart — the coaches are high on both underclassmen — but this takes the pressure off them and allows them to develop at their own pace.

Wyatt is listed as a linebacker, but he was effectively an edge rusher in Maryland’s 3-4 scheme. He played 428 snaps last season and lined up as an edge rusher on the defensive line 368 of those. He had a similar split (409 of 483) as a sophomore.
He’s been relatively productive during that stretch with 7.5 sacks, 14 tackles for loss and 36 quarterback pressures for a Terps team that never had a singular dominant pass rusher. They had eight defenders finish the season with 10 or more pressures each of the last two seasons.
Wyatt also had 20 or more stops — plays that constitute a failure for the offense — each of the last two years.

Wyatt’s bio tells the story — he’s has played in 35 career games and started 27 of those (1,077 snaps) over three seasons. His consistent production on top of that made him a perfect fit for an Indiana staff looking to fill the few holes on the roster they exited spring camp with.
The senior also appears to have the leadership qualities Cignetti covets from his veteran players. Wyatt got high marks in the category from his previous coach Mike Locksley and was one of three recipients of the team’s leadership award last spring.
