Speed isn’t just about swinging harder. It’s about unlocking something raw and hidden, that next gear of explosiveness you can only find when you push past what feels comfortable. That’s why I’m here at One Stop Power Shop, training with my coach Bobby Peterson, better known as the "Mad Scientist" of long drive. Our goal is to gain speed, push limits, and max out performance.
“Widen your base. Rock into it,” Bobby instructs. I plant my feet wider, coiling my legs like a spring, and take a deep breath before unleashing a swing that feels like I’m tearing through the air.
The ball rockets off the clubface with a piercing crack, but Bobby isn’t satisfied. “More speed,” he pushes. Another swing follows, then another, each one leaving my arms burning and my shirt soaked through with sweat, but that’s the reality of long drive. It’s not about looking smooth or stylish. It’s about effort, plain and simple, even when your body begs you to stop.
“Speed is just another word for maximum effort,” Bobby says. “If you want to gain speed, you have to strain harder.” I grit my teeth and unleash one more swing. This time, the ball explodes off the clubface like a missile. No need to watch, I know it’s a bomb.
Bobby grins. “That’s the one.”
The speed is coming. And I’m just getting started.
