Interesting Andrew Walter comments on ASU coaching staff
From today's SJ Mercury News

He didn't always have that freedom. At Arizona State, coaches wanted their quarterback to stick with the called play, even if it meant bad results. Dumping off the ball to the running back was verboten.
``The coaches in college were so scared to death of anyone making a play outside the norm,'' Walter said. ``They would get mad at you for doing something like that, so it was frustrating.''
Raiders Coach Art Shell doesn't place any such restrictions on his quarterbacks. They are told to give the called play a chance to work and explore other options if there's a breakdown.
``Coming here, it was, `Make a play however you can,' '' Walter said. ``It kind of lets me relax a little bit.
It's an article about a couple of plays Sunday where rather than run or take a sack he flipped the ball to the RB for short gains, the kind of thing Gannon used to do as a Raider.
