Weird one, seemed to happen after an automatic update caused the computer to reboot. When I click on start I no longer have the same internet explore icon all I have is the earth that says internet, but when I click on that, I don't open the browser I instead get the internet options dialog box and I've yet to figure out how to open the browser from there?

So far I've just been searching for the IE file, and opening it that way, so it's still there but it's not showing as an icon I can click on.

Weird.

Where was the icon located? On your desktop? In your quick launch toolbar?

Assuming this is XP, when you hit start, can you launch Internet explorer from that quick access menu on the top left hand section.

Can you just create yourself another shortcut by rightclicking the file that you are using to launch it, and sent to desktop? Or dragging it into your quick launch toolbar by your start button, if you use it at all.

Yes it was in that quick access menu. To be honest I think it actually did say internet before, it was just always there so I never really paid attention. But now instead of opening the browser, it opens the dialogue box.

FYI it did let me create a shortcut on the desktop that way and that confirmed that I wasn't imagining it the ICON is the E for explorer, not the globe, so for some reason that vanished from my quick access menu from the start button.

Weird, but thanks, at least now I can just use the shortcut.

Make sure the internet is set for Internet explorer.

Right click on the start button and click customize under the start menu tab. Make sure IE is selected as your default browser under Internet.

How would you download Firefox if you don't have any browser at all?

I understand that it is impossible to completely remove IE unless you recompile the kernel.
