After earning a split of the Friday doubleheader vs. Michigan State (13-6, 1-2 Big Ten) from Duane Banks Field, Iowa baseball (10-8, 4-2) closed out the three-game Big Ten series with a dominating 10-0 seven-inning run-rule victory over the Spartans on Saturday.
Redshirt senior right-hander Reece Bueter (3-0, 3.51 ERA) got the start for the Hawkeyes on Saturday afternoon, where he threw five innings, striking out a career-high eight batters while allowing four hits and three walks. In those five frames of work, Bueter twice escaped from a bases-loaded jam to keep the Spartans scoreless.
Tyler Guerin (0-0, 1.80 ERA) would relieve Bueter in the sixth inning, allowing three base-on-balls and striking out two before Brandt Hogue (0-1, 3.00 ERA) closed out the game with a scoreless seventh inning, striking out one batter on nine total pitches.
“That’s a long day and sometimes you see teams come out flat and lethargic, especially when you are playing a lot of the guys that played yesterday which was our situation today. We talked about showing some toughness. Pride, taking care of our home field and finding a way to get it done. It was a get it done day, it was it takes what it takes day. Let’s get it done and get after them right away. You couldn’t have drawn it up any better.”
“We talked before the game that it was really important to come out with a lot of energy after the extra inning game and then another nine innings,” said head coach Rick Heller.
In terms of scoring, the Hawkeyes opened the game with 10 runs in the first two innings on a four-run first inning and a six-run second, as Iowa batting around the order early would be more than enough offense to give the pitching staff a comfortable lead.
Three Hawkeyes tallied multi-hit days as Jackson Beaman, Gable Mitchell, and Ben Swails each had two hits. Beaman, Swails, and Jaixen Frost each plated two RBIs in Iowa's opening two-inning offensive barrage.
Miles Risley added three RBIs on a bases-clearing triple to go along with a highlight-reel catch at the right-center field wall in the third inning.
Overall, Iowa hit .583 (7-for-12) with runners in scoring position and .571 (8-for-14) with runners on base, which powered their offense to 10 hits on the day and their third run-rule win of the season.
The Hawkeyes' series win over the Spartans gives Iowa two consecutive series victories and a hot start to start conference play.
The Hawkeyes' next game is a single-game match vs. UIC (3-15, 0-0 Missouri Valley) on Tuesday from Duane Banks Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:02 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on Big Ten Plus (Subscription Required) and the Hawkeye Radio Network.
