Iowa baseball (20-9, 12-2 Big Ten) team extended its conference winning streak to 10 games for the first time since 2007 with a 7-1 Game 2 win vs. Northwestern (13-15, 5-6) on Saturday afternoon at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park in Evanston, Ill.
Aaron Savary (5-0, 3.43 ERA) got the start on the mound for the Hawkeyes and notched his third quality start of the season while improving to a perfect 5-0 on the campaign. The Dubuque, Iowa, native threw six innings, allowing three hits and one run, walking two, and striking out seven.
“Really well-played game today,” said head coach Rick Heller. “In all areas really. It started on the mound where Savary was fantastic. He gave us a great start.”
Anthony Watts (2-2, 4.91 ERA, 1 SV) threw the final three innings to earn the save, allowing just two hits in work on the mound.
While not originally scheduled to start, Kooper Schulte had a stellar day by going 3-for-3 with two doubles, scoring a run, and plating an RBI. Schulte was a late addition to the lineup following a scratch to Ben Swails just an hour before the first pitch.
“Kooper Schulte had a really big game,” said Heller. “Stepping in last second when Ben Swails wasn’t able to go. He clutched up big for us.”
With the game tied at 1-1 after five innings, Iowa battered the Northwestern bullpen as the Hawkeyes put up six runs in the final four frames, which included a Miles Risley solo shot to left in the seventh inning and Blake Guerin's mammoth two-run blast off the batter’s eye in center during the ninth frame. Daniel Rogers also tallied three RBIs for the Hawkeyes during the win.
“Really proud of the guys,” said Heller. “We got another series, a series on the road. I thought we played really well today. We were locked in and ready to go, we will need to be like that tomorrow.”
With the win on Saturday, the Hawkeyes have won all five of the conference series they have played in so far this season.
Iowa will look to sweep its third consecutive conference series on Sunday, with Reese Bueter expected to get the start on the mound for the Hawkeyes. The first pitch of Game 3 is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT and will be streamed on Big Ten Plus (Subscription required).
