With Iowa baseball (15-9, 8-2 Big Ten) returning to conference play following a single-game midweek matchup against Illinois State, the Hawkeyes earned another dominant victory in Game 1 of their three-game series vs. Minnesota (11-12, 2-5) on Thursday by a score of 16-7 from Siebert Field in Minneapolis, Minn.
Aaron Savary (4-0, 3.75 ERA) got the start on the mound, where he would last 3 2/3 innings while allowing four runs on five hits and striking out four.
Daniel Wright (1-0, 2.84 ERA) relieved Savary in the fourth frame, where he worked a solid 3 1/3 innings to earn the win while allowing one run on five hits and three strikeouts.
Jack Whitlock (0-0, 4.91 ERA) threw the final two innings and allowed two unearned runs on one hit.
“Our offense really picked us up today,” said head coach Rick Heller. “It was a dogfight early, Minnesota just stayed on us by getting leadoff guys on and scratching a run here and a run there. It looked like one of those games that was going to go back and forth till the end. Then Daniel Wright came in for us and slowed the game down, put some zeros up till our offense was able to put together three big innings.”
Offensively, the Hawkeyes smashed 17 hits and scored 16 runs en route to their eighth Big Ten win of the season.
Iowa plated one in the first to get the game rolling before the Hawkeyes had big innings in the second, sixth, and seventh innings, where they put up four runs in each of those frames. An Insurance run in the eighth and two in the ninth would be more than enough to get the series-opening win.
Miles Rilsey and Daniel Rogers each plated three RBIs to lead the Iowa offense. Reese Moore, Jaixen Frost, and Tyler Guerin followed their teammates with multi-RBI games with two runs apiece.
Risley was 4-for-6 at the plate, and Gable Mitchell also went with 4-for-6 and scored three runs.
“Gable Mitchell had a big game with the four hits, said Heller. “Miles Risley also had a big game with four. Tyler Guerin had a good pinch hit at bat with the bases loaded driving in two runs. We just kept on them all the way to the end, which was great to see.”
Overall, Iowa hit 11-for-24 (.458) with runners in scoring position and were 9-for-16 (.692) with runners on third with less than two outs.
Iowa's dream start to the season now has the Hawkeyes scoring 168 runs over the past 15 games, an average of 11.2 runs per game, and ten games with 10 or more runs to go along with four games with 15 or more runs scored.
Iowa will continue their three-game series on Friday with a doubleheader against the Golden Gophers from Siebert Field. Game two is scheduled to begin at noon CT and will be broadcast on Big Ten Plus (Subscription required). It can also be heard on the Hawkeyes Radio Network alongside play-by-play voice John Leo and color analyst John Evans.
