According to a report from ESPN's Pete Thamel, the Iowa Hawkeyes are reportedly dismissing head men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery.
McCaffery departs Iowa City as the program's all-time wins leader with a final record of 297-207. Under McCaffery's direction, Iowa advanced to seven NCAA Tournaments, including four in a row from 2019-23.
Iowa never advanced into the NCAA Tournament's second weekend in any of those seven tourney berths, though, and that inability to reach the Sweet 16 was a point of contention within the fan base in recent years especially.
The Hawkeyes stumbled to a 17-16 (7-13 Big Ten) finish this season and had to win at Nebraska in the regular season finale to even sneak into the Big Ten Tournament field. Iowa won just two true road games this season and was oftentimes on the wrong end of a laugher away from Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Meanwhile, the Hawkeyes' fan attendance slumped in recent seasons as fan apathy set in. According to a recent open records request and report from The Gazette, Fran McCaffery’s program averaged just 5,045 tickets scanned in its 18 regular season games and one exhibition game inside Carver during the 2024-25 campaign. That accounts for just 33.6% of Carver's capacity and was down from the 38.3% average tickets scanned from the season before.
Only four games—Dec. 12 against Iowa State (10,696), Feb. 8 against Wisconsin (8,929), Jan. 11 against Indiana (7,905) and Feb. 22 against Washington (7,683)—had more than 7,000 tickets scanned.
