When the Iowa Cubs opened the 2025 season, the Triple-A team was tabbed as one of the best in Minor League Baseball with some of the biggest named players in the Chicago Cubs' organization on the roster.

The roster will soon feature the biggest of them all.

The Chicago Cubs announced on April 15 that infielder Matt Shaw, the top prospect in the entire organization according to MLB Pipeline, was being optioned to Iowa.

Shaw hit just 1.72 with one home run and 18 strikeouts across 18 games with Chicago this season. His demotion was part of a bevy of moves announced by the team April 15.

The decision to send Shaw back to the minors was the biggest. The 23-year-old was a first-round pick by the Cubs in 2023 and rapidly rise through the minors.

Shaw reached Double-A by his first season of professional baseball in 2023 and finished last season in Des Moines hitting .298/.395/.534 with seven homers in 35 games with Iowa.
