My goodness what a pain in the ass. Guy at work came to me for the 3rd time recently saying he couldn't send email using his company account on his iPhone. I had fixed it for him a few weeks ago so I knew the password was correct. I spent 20 minutes retyping everything to make sure it was all correct. Incoming works, outgoing doesn't. Same server, same password, phone keeps telling me the password is wrong.
Just as I wanted to smash his phone I googled it and eventually found the problem on an Apple forum. Some software update, apparently most common on iPhone 4's, caused it to stop working with port 1025 for outgoing even though that's the port our provider uses. You have to change it to 25 and then it magically works. Apple has no explanation that I can find. Lots of people went into have a "genius" fix it for them and that was the most common fix although none of them were given a logical explanation for why they suddenly had to change the port. Several were told it was their ISP's fault, which is not true, we use 1025 for all email on our company computers, all Android phones who have it here use 1025, and most iPhones. Apparently the 4 doesn't and it's apparently a fairly recent update that caused this.
I can't wait until Apple fixes this and then everyone has to change back from 25 to whatever the correct port for their ISP is.
I'm not surprised I was told by our provider that iPhones have terrible security. We were changing all our Outlook passwords and the guy said do people have company email on their iPhones. I said several do and he said good luck, you can change the password all you want iPhones are terrible people will eventually hack the password on their phone and you'll find your spam increasing dramatically again.
