Started watching IC Japan in like 99. Used to have parties and BBQs surrounding it almost every weekend. The US Version pales in comparison, but so do most Popular culture items we swipe and try and incorporate as our own. I digress...

I LOVE Japanese Iron Chef. Havent watched in years, though Ive seen them all several times each.

Eel battle and Octopus battle remain two of my faves.

I used to watch this pretty regularly with a friend, and esp. after my trip to Japan and run in with the sushi chef, enjoyed it quite a bit -- the US show is really weak by contrast.

The original Iron Chef series is so campy and addicting. There is a charm to the cheesy presentation of this show. Chairman Kaga is the perfect eccentric host and Ohta is like the Todd Walsh of Iron Chef. Rosoharu Michiba, Chen Kenichi, Masaharu Morimoto, Hiroyuki Sakai and Masahiko Kobe are legendary! The sercet ingredient on the first one I ever saw was unisex salmon. That show introduced me to some nasty crap that people out there eat, like foie gras, natto, cod roe, sea urchin. Gotta love the octopus battle, where they chop the thing up, and the tentacle is still moving around. or lobster battle, where the live lobsters are in the pot trying to get out.

Iron Chef USA is so weak, I can't sit through one of those.

Allez cuisine!
