Yikes! Why? I mean, sure, I felt the last season bounced around story lines way too much, but not enough to fall in ratings or anything. I'm still hooked. What's the skinny?
our numbers cratered in Season 2 and we barely came back as it was for Season 3. And when we did get brought back for Season 3, they pumped a crapload of $ in to try and pump up the numbers, revamping the show, building a whole new (and outrageously awesome IMO) set on top of paying booku dinero to bring on Stamos...and the numbers didn't budge all that much. They actually didn't fall in the ratings...they actually rose, but I'm not sure they rose enough to justify the money spent and the money that will have to be spent to continue the show.
it's all a numbers game. our numbers are okay and still beat out whatever it went up against head to head in the time-slot for original programming, but when you're not a bona-fide hit and you're not under the umbrella of the parent company (we're a Sony production for USA Network, as opposed to being a UCP production under the USA umbrella), sometimes, the numbers just don't match up.
so, we'll see. our fate is also probably tied to what USA has in development pilot wise, IMO. They have both Burn Notice and Psych ending their runs, which means they have two slots that need to be filled. One of them will undoubtedly be HORIZON, another alien show, set in the 40's with a Nazi twist and if they have another couple that look ready to rock, my guess is we probably get pushed out.
and if that happens, I'd be pretty bummed, but a three year run anywhere on TV is pretty damn good and I'm really proud of the work that we've all done on the show. we were handed a pretty monster task "taking the show to the moon" this year and I thought we did it really well. I liked Season 2, but it was a little on the depressing side. This season in the new agency, with Stamos and TK's crazy ass girlfriend and Nico with the FBI investigation was just more fun.
happy you're still hooked though! hopefully we can keep you there for at least one more season.
Question of interest about the industry: If you're a writer on a show, is that year-round work, or seasonal?
depends. if you're working on a network series, it's pretty close to year round. the writers rooms for those shows usually gear up in June and end sometime around late March or April. For cable, it's much more seasonal. All depends on the episode order. This year, we only had ten episodes, so we ran the room from Jan. 1st to July 4th. The previous two years with 13 and 16 episodes, we ran from Jan 1st to late August.
