Deal With Vikes Gathers No Moss
Jets' Bradway had 'casual interest' in trade

Randy Moss to the Jets? It's intriguing, especially with the possibility that the Jets won't match the Washington Redskins' $35-million offer sheet to Laveranues Coles.
So intriguing, in fact, that the Jets actually inquired about trading for the Minnesota Vikings' star receiver, Newsday has learned.
Jets general manager Terry Bradway said the team had expressed "some casual interest" about trading for Moss, and a source familiar with the Jets' situation said the team inquired about Moss' availability late last week. The Vikings promptly told them there was no interest in trading Moss, who signed an eight-year, $75- million contract two years ago. Bradway said the Jets have called several teams to gauge their interest in a trade for a receiver, but at this point, "I would say a trade isn't likely."
Bradway said he still hasn't decided whether to match the Redskins' offer sheet or let Coles go, in which case the Jets would get the Redskins' No. 13 overall pick as compensation.
If Bradway doesn't feel there is a suitable option to replace Coles immediately, there is a chance the Jets will match the offer to keep him. "We're playing out all the scenarios, and one of those is to match the offer," said Bradway, who has until 4 p.m. on Wednesday to decide on Coles.
The Jets are set to meet today with former Chargers receiver Curtis Conway and will meet tomorrow with Philadelphia Eagles free agent Antonio Freeman. The Jets met with Seattle Seahawks restricted free agent receiver Darrell Jackson on Friday, but the Jets would have to give up a first-round draft pick (22nd overall) to get the receiver away from Seattle.
Bradway and other Jets officials have talked about the possibility of trading for one of several top receivers, with Moss at or near the top of that list. But the Vikings aren't dealing. They gave Moss $8 million on March 1 as part of the $18 million bonus he agreed to in 2001.
Jets quarterback Chad Pennington certainly wouldn't mind the idea of throwing to Moss; the two were teammates at Marshall. But at this point, it's not going to happen, not unless the Jets put together a package of players and/or draft picks the Vikings can't refuse. That doesn't appear likely, because Bradway doesn't like to deal away multiple picks, and any team trading a player has to take a salary-cap hit.
Jags Sign Douglas. Coveted free- agent defensive end Hugh Douglas signed a five-year, $27-million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Douglas, who had visited the Giants, had 12 1/2 sacks for the Philadelphia Eagles last season.
