Stefon Diggs grew up not far from where the Washington Commanders play their home games at Northwest Stadium. He also starred collegiately at the University of Maryland. Surprisingly, Diggs fell to the fifth round in the 2015 NFL draft, where the Minnesota Vikings happily selected him.
It didn't take Minnesota long to realize it had a steal in Diggs. Ahead of his fourth NFL season in 2018, the Vikings signed Diggs to an extension, making him one of the NFL's highest-paid receivers. Two years after signing that new contract, Diggs was traded to the Buffalo Bills, where he helped turn Josh Allen into one of the NFL's best quarterbacks.
However, that relationship began to fray, and the Bills traded Diggs to the Houston Texans ahead of the 2024 season. Last season with Houston, Diggs caught 47 passes for 496 yards and three touchdowns before injuring ACL midway through the season. Now, Diggs is an unrestricted free agent, coming off a significant injury. So, it's not a surprise that Diggs doesn't have a new team two weeks into free agency.
What about the Commanders? Could a soon-to-be 31-year-old Diggs be the perfect short-term investment for Washington? Diggs, a four-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro (as recently as 2022), may be coming off an injury, but he proved he could still be very productive last season. Diggs would slot in alongside Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel, giving the Commanders a lethal veteran trio of pass-catchers for superstar quarterback Jayden Daniels.
While this makes some sense on the surface, it's also improbable. The Commanders could use another receiver, but why not pick that player up in next month's draft? Washington needs to add youth and speed to the group. While Diggs may not be as fast as he once was and is coming off an injury, he remains a savvy route runner who can create after the catch.
The Commanders will likely add more receiver help; they will probably look somewhere other than Diggs, who has a strong personality. Washington has the type of locker room to thrive with these personalities. Still, it's doubtful that general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn want a veteran receiver around Daniels, who is always begging for the ball.
Diggs returning home to the Washington area to finish his NFL career sounds like a great story. It just seems very unlikely.
