I know that this isn't about the dbacks but this is the best forum for it.

Matsui is a top running canidate for the AL RoY

My question is should he be eligible for the rookie of the year at the age of 29.

The age gap between him and other top canidates
Baldelli 22
Berroa 25

He has been playing *pro ball* in japan for many years and is far more polished then the other young RoY candidates. I believe in the NHL they have an Age limit for RoY is this correct? If so I believe they should install this sort of rule to prevent older players from winning the RoY

Well Oscar,

I think if you think about the first ROY award winner (and namesake for the award) and think about his age and think about his "pro ball" experience, well then you'd have all the answers you're looking for.

If that doesn't help, try looking at the 1950 ROY or the 1952 ROY (our own Joe Black)

Although Jackie Robinson was a 4-letter man at UCLA (baseball, basketball, football, and track), I believe he had only 1 year of professional experience, with the AAA Montreal Royals. He was older, but had limited Pro experience.

As a side-thought, my father was a Giants fan and took me to games at Roosevelt Stadium to see the Jersey City Giants. He told me that I was in the stands (a five-year old) when Jackie made his Pro (International League) debut (Royals vs. Giants) in 1946.

I used to run into Joe Black regularly at the Bashas at Shea and 32nd St and we'd talk baseball. (1952 was the first year I was solid baseball fan, and the Dodgers were my team. 'Pissed off my father.)

Joe remembered every pitch he ever threw. He hated the Dodgers for trading him to the Reds midway through the '55 World Championship season.

But I never really discussed his years before the Dodgers. I don't remember if he played in the Negro League or not.

But, you're right. Both he and Robby were older than typical rookies.

So if a player comes out of say Arena Football or the Canadian league he should not get the ROY award for football?? What about the minor leaguers? should they be eligible? They are getting so-called "Pro" experience? Don't get me wrong I don't think he should win it but he is a "rookie" in this league......

If it's not sarcasm then it's a rather uninformed statement to think it's a two horse race. Rather media influenced also.

Where are Jody Gerut, Angel Berroa, or Mark Teixeia?

You chose the 5th best rookie over the 4th because the 4th is too old? Makes no sense to me.

Regarding the age/experience of Matsui, again, look at the history of the award and then try to make an arguement against his eligability.
