The TV commentators, last night, said that Tom Moore(OC) would give Peyton Manning three plays, pass and run. If the Saints were in a Cover Two defense, with the safeties playing back, Peyton would call a run. In a Cover Three or Man he'd call a pass. Is it that simple?

yeah when you have athletes who can block, run, and catch. Reggie wayne just kept running by Jason David. Simple.

It is when you can trust all 11 of your players to execute.

The more you have to overcome breakdowns and inconsistency, the more you have to get cute with the scheming.

Exactly. The Cardinals maybe have three players that are at that level; Boldin, Fitzgerald and Wilson.

The plays in the NFL aren't as simple as "I-Form Run Left" or whatever other crap is in Madden 08.

From my understanding, a "play" in the NFL has several set audibles for blocking schemes, sets for running lanes, and usually between 5-10 WR routes per WR per play. Adjustments are made pre-snap based on how the defense lines up & how the offensive coordinator expects the defense to react.

With Peyton Manning basically being an on-field OC, I'd only give him three plays too. Let him figure it out, he's damn good at it.

Charlie Weis was on Cowherd's ESPN Radio show this morning and they were discussing OC play calls to the QB. He said that Manning gets a single phrase from the OC that stands for a 3-play combination of 2 runs and a pass (and the "plays" are as Vince described). He said Brady would get a phrase that contained two plays, but that three would be too confusing for that particular QB. He also said that there were a lot of QB's in the league, several of whom would be considered pro-bowl level, that only want (and get) one play called, with no choices.

He was also asked which of the 3 sophomore QB's (Leinart, Young & Cutler) will be the "best" and he stated Leinart with no hesitation. He said that Matt has the best football mind, and laughed when talking about Matt's arm strength by saying that, "he made all the passes he needed to make when he played against ND".

Jeff, didn't the Colts have 10 penalties, almost all on offense, including motion, holding, and several 25 second clock expirations? They also had 2 fumbles, losing 1.

I'm not going back to check the stats because I don't care enough. The point is that they are not always functioning in perfection. They are so good at overcoming their mistakes (and the Saints were so pathetic at everything) that people overlook their flaws.

We need to become that way too. Nobody works flawlessly.

You know what Skkorp, we seen a little of this in preseason. We had a couple of drives where we had a nice run called back and we overcame it with a first down. I recall it happening a couple of times. I hope that trend continues because you are right, teams will stub their collective toes along the way.

Bingo. They certainly made their share of mistakes, but looked either very good or downright great otherwise.

The Packer playbook (circa Vince L) could have been written on the back of a pack of matches. When you have disciplined horses and smart sideline management it gets pretty simple. Ditto the John Robinson era at USC.

Jeff, see my post. It took me a few more words to say the same thing.
