One of the hardest things about dealing with "unofficial" salary reports is that they are too vague to determine exactly what the first year salaries are.
- There is a report that the Nash deal may actually run over six years, rather than five, which might reduce the first year to about $9 million.
- Reports on the Q deal range from $42 to $50 million. This is a huge range. If it is actually closer to $42, then the first year is probably around $5.5 million. If it is higher range, then it might be closer to $6 million, but perhaps the higher range involves incentives that don't kick in the first year.
If the starting numbers are on the lower end of ranges and the cap is set at $45; it might leave around $2.5 million to re-sign Dice. This is awfully tight and Dice might get a bit more from a team like Detroit.
Would Dice take less money to stay in Phoenix? We may soon find out. Beside the bonding he had with some of the players, Phoenix might make long term financial sense for him. In Detroit, he would be strictly a backup - especially if they try to get minutes for Darko.
On the Suns, Dice would likely start most games and get between 25 and 30 minutes. What difference does that make? Look at the kind of contract Camby got after just one healthy season. On the Suns Dice would be showcased, while he might get lost in the shuffle with the Pistons.
In any case, I think there is a chance Dice will return, but it not as likely as it would be if the Suns had more cap space.
