Ok, let me preface this by saying that I realize full well how impressive the technology is in this video. I also have to say I think it's an absolutely horrible thing.

Do we not have enough problems with people wiring into a game console and ignoring the outside world? do we really need something like this? Don't get me wrong, I'm a pretty avid gamer on both XBox and PC platforms. I love video games and when I'm home with some time to kill, I am perfectly content to park myself on the couch and play some XBox. I don't believe video games "are evil" or anything like that, I think they actually have some positive qualities, but this is just too far. This is too encouraging to people (both kids and adults) to further block out the outside world. Why make actual friends when you can just make one that has any set of qualities you want? Why go out and experience anything new when you can just program it into the XBox and never leave your living room?

I know how addictive video games can be. I myself occasionally find myself looking at the clock and saying "holy crap, I have been playing this for 4 hours now?" I just see far too many negatives to something like this despite how impressive the technology is. Please tell me someone else finds this a little creepy?

Video games are cool, but this a step too far IMO.

I actually agree with you on this one. I only play a little guitar hero here and there but that is it. I would rather be outside playing ball.

I just think the technology is really cool.

Vegas, baby, yeah!
It would be interesting if it passes the Turing Test.

Dibs on being rescued from an assassination attempt by a Summer Glau replicant.
The rest of you can just get in line.

Not even close. These games are still scripted to large degree. The system can recognize certain facial features and responses. However, someone still had to program each and every possible scenario.

It's not self aware. We are a long way away from something like that and you won't get that out of a pre-scripted (no matter how good) game. Even today's technology that claims to "learn" base on user input, still only does so inside guidelines or parameters. They can't go outside of the box so to speak. It ends up just being a variation of what's in the box already.

I will be worried when computers can can write their own code to accommodate situations in which they have no programing for. Then I will be worried.

That's what some call the meta-Turing test - when a computer can design something by itself outside of it's original programming, and a human cannot tell if the product of that programming is human or computer.

So you're saying if I take off my pants and shake my belly mid-game, the computer won't have a pre-programmed parameter for that and I win?

Sweet!

The scale at which stuff like that works is still in a box though. Computers can't say for instance start over from scratch and re-write their base code without limitation. Let alone allow something as small as a console or a game played on that console go Skynet.

No doubt. The real test of intelligence is to create something unique and spontaneous - without direct programming or direction. We're no where near to that. I'd imagine that we'd all be devoured by grey goo before computer programming reached that point.

So hold back awesome new technology because some people will prefer that over going outside? The government controls me enough, Natal is bad ass looking and im all for it as I am any kind of new sick technology.

Movies, television and th internet are enough already, WoW is a bigger problem than project natal.

I don't say that it should be banned or disallowed, I just said it was stupid. If you like it, I fully support your right to buy it, I just think the development time that this project took could have probably been used for something a little less lame. :D
