Is Veldeheer the best contract in FA so far?

We're all a little biased here obviously, but if there has been a better contract signed in all this madness so far than Veldeheer I can't find it.

5 years for a 26 year old. Check.
High ratio of salary to signing bonus protects us from dead money if he gets released. Check.
Less money than older, crappier players received (Monroe, Saffold) at this position. Check.

Even if we leave talent and potential out of the equation, when you look at the ridiculous contracts signed yesterday it's hard to find one that makes more team-sense than this one. The only exception might be some low-money, short-term deals that have no financial risk (McFadden for 1 year) but those deals usually involve risky players.

Wouldn't call Monroe a "crappier" player but I would agree with you in terms of the contract it was probably the best one of the day IMO.

I dont know if monroe is a "crappier player" but we did get a great deal for a quality player.

I know we would not be in such a good position (in FA) if he had gone somewhere else. Now it opens the whole process and he's above average at the position. NOT PERFECT but an upgrade and we go forward more sure footed.

Veldheer is not only the best contract signing so far, it is more than likely the best signing for the money that will come out of the entire free agent period. Great job front office.

Yeah I agree. Saffold is actually younger than Veldheer, but hasn't hit the same level of LT play that Veldheer has.

Some of the other OL contracts have been shocking. Austin Howard 6 mil per season. Wow.

My guess is he wakes up in a day or two, beats the hell out of his agent (brother) and doesn't show up for OTA's, camp etc.. lol

Yeah, I'd say it's up there. Alteraunn Verner's probably the next up.

Verner would be my vote as the top signing. Considering what some of the other DB's were getting this guy was a steal. He can flat out play.

We shall see how well he plays.

This. Is the feeling that Steve Keim just completely buffaloed Veldheer's brother, who didn't have the number of a bunch of other teams in the NFL to see what else was available?

I get that Oakland might have been willing/able to pay Veldheer more, and he didn't want to go there. But JV is a former fourth-round pick who has maybe made $2M total playing in the NFL. This might be the only big contract he gets.

It's just as possible that the media in this case doesn't have the pulse of NFL management and Veldheer didn't have the value on the open market that many here believed.

One thing that I love about this contract, if accurate: the per-game active roster bonus of $200K per season. Really nicely structured for a guy who has some injury concerns. I don't know if Russ has mentioned it here or elsewhere, but that's some nice protection against PED or substance-abuse violations.

Per someone in the Veldheer family the Raiders didn't offer anything close to what he got here in AZ so I doubt they were willing to pay more. I still can't get my mind around what they payed Saffold.

everyone's different

Veldheer may very well have decided that the situation he was going to was a factor once his minimum threshold of money was cleared

besides: the personal income tax rate in California for a guy like that is 12+%, in Arizona is 5.4% ( and based off your Fed AGI) Oakland's after tax offer might not be all that higher than AZ's

Raiders also lost Lamarr Houston to the Bears. And most of their free agent visits/signings have been underwhelming with the exception of Roger Saffold and the consensus is that they overpaid for him.

I think it is a combination of things. Veldheer was upset that McKenzie dragged things on and on. He talked to Carson Palmer and got excited about the situation with the Cardinals. He knew his income taxes would be substanially less for the 8 home games in Arizona. He knows Oakland is still in rebuilding mode.

And he's a high third round pick (#69 overall).

We may know more in 20 minutes or we may get politically correct happy talk.

But, compared to something like extending Levi brown or signing Stu Bradley and Kolb, Veldheer is a great signing.

I'm very concerned about his torn bicep, for it seems that type of injury is quite lijkely to reoccur. : stayedatahollidayinnlastnight

We are better at LT, that is for sure. How much better remains to be seen. Similar to ILB. We are worse at ILB than we were with Dansby. How much worse is the looming question.

I keep wondering if and how much Palmer had to do with Valdheer signing here.

I honestly think it had a lot to do with it and it makes me feel good about Veldheer because Palmer would not endorse a player who he feels makes him a tackling dummy... I would not expect a Kolb with head injuries endorsing a Levi Brown lol

After Verner sure. Veldheer is a steal though, he's a top 10 LT.

Veldheer wasn't even the best LT signing, Monroe was. I have a sneaky suspicion that while Veldheer will be an upgrade at LT for the Cards, he's not the upper echelon LT some are trying to make him to be.
