Barbosa - Payton, but with 50% of the game. (and years less experance. came into the nba a full year younger then payton did. he also has an outside shot, that payton never has had)
Johnson - Pippen. (but moved to the shooting guard spot)
Marion - Rodman, but with an offensive game. (how about cedic ceballos, that plays defense).
Amare - A mix of Shawn Kemp and Karl Malone, only meaner. (moses malone)
Lampe - A center version of Larry Bird. (yea i like this one)
White - The Poor Mans Oneal. (hehe, less the offensive)
Zarko - Wanna be Tony Kukoc. (a raw tom chambers)
Jacobsen. - Less skilled version of Sczerbiak. (thunder dan less the head)

QUOTE]

1. Payton was a lot further developed when he came into the league than Leandro. It will be a while before we know if Barbosa can develop into that class of player.

2. I did not see much of Pippen in his early days. By the time he was playing on championship teams he was an elite defender to go with his offensive skills. JJ is pretty good on defense, but has a long way to go to get to Pippen's level.

3. I don't see the comparison of Rodman and Marion at all. In his early days, Rodman was a lock down defender and vastly better than Shawn on defense. Shawns ability in the open court makes him more like Dominique Wilkins, although not nearly as good at getting to the basket.

4. If memory serves me, Kemp was not even a starter for his first couple of years. Even then, Kemp was a lot bigger than Amare but not nearly as skilled.

As for Karl, it is hard to compare the two because the team offenses are so different. Karl was a great back to the basket offensive player while Amare still prefers facing the basket (the illegal defense rules of the time permitted Karl to isolate on a defender and just back him into the paint.

5. I see Lampe as a potential Vlade Divac with a jump shot. Lampe is a lot bigger than Bird and perhaps more athletic, but he has not shown the insticts that made Bird a Hall of Famer.

6 I'm not sure there are any "name" players like White. He is certainly one of the strongest players in the NBA, rebounds well and blocks out. He has a hard time catching the ball, but once he gets it most oppoents end up fouling him as they try to knock the ball out of his hands. But he is too slow, too foul prone, and has too weak of ball handling skilss to get very many minutes

7. A young Kukoc would be a plus but we haven't ssen enough healthy Zarko to know how he will turn out.

8. Casey COULD become another Sczerbiak, but Wally seems a lot more skilled at making his own shot. Casey is too limited in his shot selection to be compared to Wally.

1. Barbosa--Payton is too good, so how about Darrell Armstrong?
2. Johnson--when he's shooting well, maybe Mitch Richmond
3. Marion--can't think of anybody
4. Amare--Karl Malone, but (hopefully) with some class and sportsmanship
5. Lampe--somewhere between Nowitzki and Peja Drobnjak
6. White--Chris Dudley--look very different, but similar impact
7. Zarko--if we're lucky, Detlef Schrempf with a touch of KVH
8. Jacobsen--Rick Fox

Barbosa: Tony Delk (but Darrell Armstrong is a good comparison too).

Johnson: maybe Clyde Drexler? I'm trying to think of another versatile, basically smooth swingman with an erratic shot.

Marion: I like the Ceballos-with-defense comparison. Other than that it's hard to say. Xavier McDaniel?

Stoudemire: Jermaine O'Neal with more hunger.

Lampe: Too soon to make much of a guess, but I'm thinking Rik Smits.

White: Billy Paultz. (Had to do one with a "color mismatch.")

Cabarkapa: Potentially like Kukoc, but also with some Dan Langhi thrown in.

Jacobsen: Danny Ainge, for sure. If he keeps improving, he'll be almost identical to Ainge in about three years.

Barbosa= Way too early to compare to anyone, but right now I'd say like the Tony Delk, only Barbosa is a better shooter.
JJ= I'd almost go with Penny only JJ doesn't have the point guard instincts.
Marion= Here is my Pippen. Good defender, good all around player.
Amare= Malone only quicker, needs to work on fundamentals.
Lampe= Kukoc.
White=Mark West.
Zarko= Schrempf, both had good instincts.
Jacobsen= Steve Kerr.

this should be a championship team. :)

Barbosa - a better version of Tony Delk

JJ - to me he is a softer version of Paul Pierce

Marion - I don't know, but IMO he sure isn't Scottie Pippen or Dennis Rodman.

Amare Stoudemire - young Shawn Kemp

Lampe - a much smaller Sabonis

White - why bother?

Cabarkapa - Cedric Ceballos in vanilla

Jacobsen - a very poor man's Danny Ainge

Leandro is much much faster than Delk. Delk was never much of a PG, but I think it is too early to tell with Leandro.

Penny played PG in college while JJ has played PG for two weeks. I did not see Penny that often when he was young and healthy, but I had the impression that he was very explosive. By contrast, I think JJ is more physical. For that reason I think JJ could become another Mitch Richmond.

Malone had 3 years of college before enterin the NBA. Malone's stats in his second season was somewhat better than Amare's (Karl was healthy) but it wasn't until his third year that he became totally dominant: 27.7 ppg and 12 rpg.

The comparison with with Kemp is no contest, Amare is much better at this stage than Kemp was. In Kemp's frist year he scored only 6.5 ppg and grabbed 4.3 rpg. Kemp was much better in his second year, but still only averaged 15 ppg and 8.4 rpg. Amare is scoring 19.9 ppg and grabbing 8.8 rpg after a very slow start.

Lampe is so much bigger than Kukoc it is hard for me to deal with that comparision. Kukoc was always and outside guy.

White and West? Both are short for a center. White is much stronger and West was much better with the ball in his hands.

Zarko= Schrempf, both had good instincts.
Jacobsen= Steve Kerr.

We can only hope.

Barbosa--Bobby Jackson
Johnson--Clyde Drexler
Marion--Jerome Kersey
Lampe--Danny Ferry, could become a Chambers (he's not playing like a center, folks).
Zarko--Detleff Schrempf on a really bad day.
Jacobsen--Ainge, Hornacek (Jeff had a much better mid-range game)

I could live with that.

Marion--Jerome Kersey
Kersey was a lot taller but I don't think he was as athletic.

Lampe--Danny Ferry, could become a Chambers (he's not playing like a center, folks).

Lampe is a lot bigger than Ferry and Chambers but is starting at a much younger age. I think Lampe is quicker and more athletic than Ferry, but is just learning how to play inside and has not done much weight training yet.

Zarko--Detleff Schrempf on a really bad day.

I think he could evolve in that direction. I just hope Zarko can get strong enough to make the rest of his skills available.
Jacobsen--Ainge, Hornacek (Jeff had a much better mid-range game)

I keep hoping Jacobsen develops into a that kind of all round shooter, but he has a long way to go. When he was drafted I thought he might become another Chris Mullen, but so far he has not developed like Chris did.

You guys are too young.

Amare = Maurice Lucas.
Joe Johnson = Keith Wilkes (ok so Wilkes was a forward. Today he'd be a 2 guard)

JJ's game just reminds me of Clyde's. He has that smoothness about him. He also has that quiet demeanor. Clyde did alway have that little bit of a confident smirk though. JJ doesn't have that.

Kersey was a very athletic 6-7 small forward. Kersey had a little more strength, Shawn has the hops.

I'm not sold on Lampe yet. He's not as mobile as a young Chambers, nor does he have the hops (if you haven't seen that photo Chambers dunking, head above the rim, stretched out like superman, you've got to see it. In his early days Chambers had incredible athleticism to go with his skill).

Schrempf was alot stronger than Zarko, but a similar game.

I know Kersey was listed at 6'7", but he must have had awfully long arms. In any case, Kersey was listed at 245.

I watched Lampe in practice prior to a game and he dunked just fine. It's just that he can do a power dunk without leaving the ground.

In any case, Lampe is almost 7'0" and is expected to grow another two inches before he is done. His problem is that he needs to get stronger and with it more agressive.

Schrempf was alot stronger than Zarko, but a similar game.

Schrempf was only 6'9" 215. I don't think Schrempf started for the first several years of his career and did not average double digit scoring until his fourth year.

are we comparing who we think they equate to at their present state of ability/maturity or what we think they can become (ceiling)?

i'll go with the later:

barbosa - bobby jackson is the best comparison i've seen. not an assist man, but can help run a well-oiled machine. very quick with and without the ball, and a nice streaky stroke.

amare - definitely young kemp. not second year kemp, mind you, but what he evolved into prior to becoming fat elvis. mo lucas is another good choice, but amare is not quite the intimidator that lucas was yet.

lampe - no way chambers. he's not the athlete chambers was in his prime. and bird? c'mon guys that's an INCREDIBLE reach. he hasn't shown the innate court awareness that bird exhibited from the get-go. he isn't a back to the basket player (yet, i hope he developes that part of his game) and does have a nice stroke and feel for the offensive game though. maybe a nice-guy version of bill laimbeer.

jacobsen - you guys are selling ainge WAAAAY short. he was a phenomenal basketball player. jacobsen can't hold his jock. at best jacobsen is a poor man's craig ehlo. and he's NOWHERE NEAR HORNY'S LEVEL. also, he's not the athlete that thunder dan was. remember back before he started setting up for crazy dan majerle range 3's, he was taking the ball to the rack and dunking on people like manute bol. casey will never be able to do that.

marion - he's a difficult one. his game is similar to 'nique, but without the power and ability (or desire) to draw contact. rodman? only b/c he's an undersized rebounder. otherwise he has nothing rodman had. pippen? marion is not the ballhandler/distributor/defender pippen was in his prime. x-man? naw, x was an undersized post player. his ability to hit the 3 and rebound couched with a poor handle and contact avoidance really puts me at a loss. ceballos was best as a garbage man, so i don't think that equates either.

jj - another difficult one. has good court awareness and average athleticism (that's what separates him from pippen imo, that and not nearly as much confidence). his size makes him somewhat of an anomaly. maybe steve smith? smith was pumped as a pg when he first entered the league and eventually slid over to sg. but he was always a big sg with pg skills. yeah, i think a young steve smith is the best comparison.

white - i don't even think it's right to compare him to anyone. west is prolly the best.

zarko - haven't seen enough of him to make a comparison. hopefully he's got some tom chambers or kukoc, or a combo thereof in him.

"Smooth as silk" Wilkes. If I recall he started with the Warriors and won a title there, then became a Laker. Did he change his name?

Memory fails me. He played at UCLA in college.

Payton, Rodman, Shawn Kemp, Bird, Kukoc, Sczerbiak and a less talented Shaq? Are you sure you didn't fall asleep first?

Why the hell isn't this team in first place?

This is the greatest team in the history of the world! I could be the eighth man on this team and they'd still win 70 games.

I think the problem with comparing many of the SUns players to past NBA players is that they are so young. You really have to wait 3 years before you can compare Lampe to Bird's rookie year. (still no way)

And this year would be like Payton's rookie year. The Kemp comparison is fair but like someone stated Amare is ahead of Kemp at the same age.

My Favorite, CJake a poor mans Craig Ehlo" :) that sums him up pretty well.

MArion: I really like Shawn Marion. He may be the best rebounder I've ever seen for his size but he shoots like a girl. Really, the other night I was bored and watched a couple of minutes of the womans tourney and it dawned on me. Only problem is most of the women shot that crazt push shot a lot better than Marion does.

Zarko: dought he'll ever be more than a good role player. If we're really lucky he could be a nice 6th man some day for a good Suns team. He could be a very poor man's Danny Manning. (after the knee surgeries)

And don't forget that their ball is smaller, so they have a greater margin for error when shooting.

lol dev. I had just put in 10 hours of work before that... :)

I was kinda meaning what their "sytles" remind me of. Now that I rethink it:

Barbosa - Bobby Jackson.
JJ - Still stand by Pippen :D
Marion - ...I cant think of anything but rodman. I know, its not that close.
Amare - Kemp, Malone
White - Undersized and less skilled (duh) O'neal
Zarko - Kukoc
Lampe - ..Bird! ;)
Jacobsen - Ainge, maybe someday

So basically we have a lineup of:

Bobby Jackson
Scottie Pippen
Dennis Rodman
Karl Malone
Larry Bird

I can dream!

devil i saw zarko during the summer last year and let me tell this guy is going to be very good, but he has been hurt so much this year that very hard for him to show much. remember he missed training camp, missed a big junk of games and even when he has been back he hasnt gotten much playing time. yes he does need to work on his strenght, get his confendence back on his outside shoot, but this guy goes to the basket hard and without fear he doesnt mind contact and has a very good feel for the game. dont judge him by a injury plague season. wait and i think you will find that he will be a very good player.

I was thinking more of their playing style than eventual level of play.

Jacobsen IS very much in the mold of Ainge's playing style. He is certainly not on the same level of effectiveness.

Marion is tough. Suns old timers might remember Alvin Scott. Same playing style, but Marion has made it work with more effectiveness. He is nothing like Rodman.

Steve Smith is a great comparison for JJ, wish I would have thought of that one.

Zarko has shown some of Chambers same skill set. Not the same hops, but similar mobility and shooting.

Lampe, I had been thinking about Laimbeer, but couldn't bring myself to say it. Laimbeer could shoot the 3, defend, reboud, and play absolutely as dirty as humanly possible. Otherwise he stayed out of the way. Lampe has more skills, more mobility, and not nearly the nasty streak.

Back in February Lampe scored on a fast break against the Pacers. I doubt Laimbeer ever scored on a fast break unless it was because he was slow getting back on defense.

Lampe has vastly more offensive skills than Laimbeer. All Laimbeer did was shoot jump shots, but Lampe can shoot, drive the basket, pass, and move without the ball. He still looks lost at times, but that is only a question of experience.

As for defense, Laimbeer was a first rate thug. He was not athletic, couldn't jump, and wasn't even over poweringly strong. But he was relentless and as you say, "nasty".

That is what Lampe has to learn. Hanging around Amare should help.

I'm sorry if I just don't understand the Bill Laimbeer comparison. Yes, they are both white guys of roughly the same size, but otherwise I don't see it one bit. Lampe is not a good defender. It was Laimbeer's strength. On the other end of the court I don't remember Bill Laimbeer ever dribbling the ball between his legs, spinning to the basket, or hitting fadeaway jump shots from the perimeter. We have already seen each of these things from Lampe in limited playing time.
