As per Jon Heyman, the deal is done! Mark Reynolds has been traded to the Orioles for Pitchers David Hernandez and Kam McKolio (Big Boy, 6 foot 9).
Mickolio: NASTY fastball but not much else. He's got serious control issues, but with the right pitching coach, that could be harnessed. He's got the potential to be an electric middle relief pitcher/ closer if he can get the right coaching.
Hernandez: Has a nice three pitch repitoire and can rack up the Ks. Could be a #4-#5 starter next season, with some growth potential.
Not a bad trade IMHO.
Good move. You can't have the #1 and #2 strikeout hitters on the same team and be competitive. I bet Upton stays put now.
Not to bring up another "protection in lineup" argument, but who will bat behind Upton now?Agreed... been saying for the past 2 years that one of the two was going to have to go. They made the right choice in trading Reynolds, as Upton still possesses the chance for improving at the plate, whereas I think Mark is who he is... A guy that at best might hit .240 or so and lead the league in K's, but will certainly put up healthy HR numbers and will always give 100%...
Now it's really up to Justin to make the type of improvements many here believe he is capable of making. I have my doubts about the kid, but would love to see him figure things out and begin hitting .290 to .310 on a routine basis!

no just wondering.Don't know... but, are you suggesting that Upton had protection previously??
Yeah sure. Slappy Slappertons better not bat 4 or 5. Ugh.Maybe Melvin Mora will "protect" J-Ups.
Yep. I won't go as far as calling Hernandez "low end" as he could be a good piece (but with relievers you just never know how long until their careers fall apart), but this is a classic example of selling low.We got raked over the coals.
We gave away a player approaching his prime with legitimate 40 home run power in a non steriods era for a couple of low end pitching prospects. Awful...

Mark Reynolds was slowly becoming a liability for this team. The strikeout #s are unacceptable unless he can sustain a .260 or more BA. Mark hit .198 last, below the Mendoza line.
Moreover, the club can use his salary to beef up the bullpen, which was the bane of this team's existence last season.
Yup... Reynolds was a liability at the plate, more than a threat. And coupled with Upton, it was simply not a sustainable combination... One had to go.
I really liked Reynolds. The guy always gave us fans max effort and left everything on the field. I'll miss watching him play.
That said, I won't miss the sinking feeling I got every time he stepped in the box, especially at crucial times.
Best of luck Mark.
