BLOOMINGTON — Indiana basketball's longtime athletic trainer Tim Garl will not be part of new coach Darian DeVries' staff, according to statement from Garl's attorney.

Garl was informed by Indiana athletic director Scott Dolson that his contract wouldn't be renewed because the program was looking for a "fresh start" for the training staff, and his last day with the university was Monday.

The Hoosiers previously announced that longtime team physician Larry Rink, who is a member of the athletic department's hall of fame, was retiring at the end of the 2024-25 season. Rink's tenure dates back to the 1980 season when he launched a cardiovascular testing program with IU’s men’s basketball student-athletes.

Garl, an Elkhart native, joined the staff the following year and continuously served as the team's athletic trainer for four plus decades. He previously served on the US Olympic Committee’s Sports Medicine Program for 25 years.

He was added as a defendant in the federal class action lawsuit filed against the school by former basketball players including Haris Mujezinovic and Charlie Miller over the conduct of former team physician Dr. Brad Bomba Sr. on Jan. 14.

According to the complaint, Bomba subjected the players to “medically unnecessary, invasive, harassing, and demeaning digital rectal examinations” during their required annual physical examinations.

The complaint states as Bomba’s direct supervisor that Garl had “actual knowledge of and participated in Dr. Bomba Sr.’s constitutional violations by continuing to assign IU’s student athletes to Dr. Bomba Sr."

Garl's attorney, Christopher Lee of the Indianapolis-based firm Dinsmore & Shohl, referenced his client's job status in a motion he filed arguing for an expedited ruling on a motion to dismiss the complaint March 10.

"At the end of the season, Indiana University will announce the next head coach, so that individual can begin preparing for the 2025-2026 college basketball season," the motion stated. "Such an outcome would bring an unfair, premature end to Mr. Garl’s illustrious career, and leave him searching for employment with these allegations still unresolved.

"One of that individual’s first tasks will be to determine whether to retain existing staff or bring in new staff. Given that Mr. Garl is the only individual defendant named in the amended complaint, and is still employed by Indiana University as the head trainer for IUMB, should this case continue past the beginning of April, the next coach may decide not to keep Mr. Garl on the staff while the allegations against him remain pending."

While the court denied the motion for an expedited ruling, the judge has yet to rule on the original motion to dismiss the complaint.
