This week, J.J. McCarthy revealed the Minnesota Vikings haven't told him that he'll be the team's starter in 2025. But the meniscus injury that sidelined him for all of 2024 won't prevent him from competing for the job.

Following Kwesi Adofo-Mensah's Wednesday press conference, which detailed the state of the Vikings' quarterback room, ESPN's Kevin Seifert gave an update on McCarthy's knee.

McCarthy has been cleared for offseason activities after recovering from a torn meniscus in his right knee last August, and he is working to regain weight after losing more than 20 pounds during his recovery. He told FanDuel TV this week that the Vikings had not told him he would be their starter. But at the very least, he is set to take the first-team reps when on-field work begins later this spring.

The update makes sense, as the Vikings bypassed bringing back Sam Darnold and told Aaron Rodgers they wouldn't be signing him "at this time". If there were a legitimate concern about McCarthy's knee, the Vikings would have at least added an experienced veteran.

They will likely add a veteran between now and training camp, but with McCarthy appearing to be healthy, the Vikings are taking their time in finding the proper backup.
