Going old school here but does anybody know why Jackie Smith is not on the Ring of Honor yet. All the others in the Ring of Honor deserve to be there. Just cannot think why Jackie Smith is not. He is in the NFL Hall of Fame and one of the great TE's ever to play. Different Era but he was still great.

Great player. As much as I despised the Cowboys, it was heartbreaking to see him drop that touchdown against the Steelers in the Super Bowl.

Yes, he should be! Funny, when Rams were in St. Louis he was in the ROH with other former STL Cardinals and Rams.
Bidwill SR. held a gruge against players he felt were not loyal to the organization, like Smith coming out of retirement to play for the archrival Cowboys.
Same can be said why it took Jim Hart to get in, he went and played his last season with the Redskins.
Also, why isn't Jim Bakken in? Larry Fitzgerald just tied him for all-time games played as a Cardinal.
Only the Bidwill's know the real reason why.

I think it's been talked about before on this forum, but I'm pretty sure Bakken said some crap about the organization after his final season. They essentially replaced him with another kicker and just sent him packing unceremoniously.

If memory serves I believe Steve Little replaced the great Jim Bakken. Little's story w/ the Cards was a sad and tragic one.

Wow, you guys are going old school. I expect part of the reason for the underrepresented St. Louis guys might be because they are more associated with the old franchise location? But it is a shame, because a lot of those older era players were some of the best in the franchise history.

I'm not aware, but are Roger Wehrli or Larry Wilson in the AZ Cards ROF? That might be an indicator of the team's mindset on this.

They are both in and are HOF. Jackie Smith is a HOF but not in. Meanwhile Jim Hart and Roy Green are in but not HOF. Both deserve to be in though along with Smith

Some notes of his career of #81

Smith was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the tenth round (129th overall) of the 1963 NFL Draft.

He was originally projected to play flanker, but was named the starter at tight end after Taz Anderson was injured. In the fifth game of the season against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he posted 212 yards and 2 touchdowns on 9 receptions, while playing a key role in a 24-23 win. He would not relinquish his starter position back and would become a team co-captain.

He was the team starting punter from 1964 to 1966, until Chuck Latourette took over the role.

Smith played in five straight Pro Bowls and posted more than 40 receptions in seven seasons.

His best season came in 1967, when in 14 games he registered 56 receptions for 1,295 (third on the league), 21.5 yard-average per reception and 9 touchdowns. Smith proved his durability by playing in 121 straight games, until suffering torn ligaments in the ninth game of the 1971 season.

On January 29, 1994, Smith was officially voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, as the third tight end to ever receive this honor and recognized as one of the key players that helped revolutionize the position. Besides the HOF he has been inducted into Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. In 2001, he was inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame. In 2009, he was inducted into the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame.

No doubting his ability, but my impression was that Jackie considered himself more Cowboy than Cardinal. Wrong?

The manner in which he ran with the ball after the reception was Gronk like. He is still kicking @ 78. Do it Cards.

I met Jackie Smith when the Cards were playing the Giants and Yankee Stadium was being refurbished. The game was played in the Yale Bowl in New Haven, CT. Shaking hands with Jackie Smith is one of the great "thrills" in my life. He was very gracious. My Dad gave Conrad Dobler a pack of cigs. for the flight home. With my Dad gone now, these memories are of even greater importance to me.

Have a great day, everyone!

The entire 1975 offensive line needs to be enshrined as well. Dierdorf is in but that's it. That team kept Hart, not exactly the most fleet of foot QB, upright. 6 sacks I believe in '75 and only 52 times from 1974-77. To put that into perspective, in a game against the Colts in 1980 the Cards sacked Bert Jones 12 times. To put that more into perspective, Cardinal QB's were sacked 52 times this season.

I would hope not or can't even understand how he could when the fact is he played 1 season with Dallas after being asked by Tom Landry to come out of retirement and he played 16 seasons with the Cardinals. Don't see how a player could ID with a team he played only one year with nor could I understand it if he did.

I think I read that Jackie Smith called the Cards and offered to come out of retirement to play after the Cards lost a couple of TEs due to injury and the Cards turned him down (not interested)…..Cowboys asked him from what I read after Cards turned him down.

That particular season it wouldn't have made much sense. The Cards were awful in 1978, losing their first 8 games. Cards could have had a modern day Gronk and it wouldn't have made a difference.

Here's what I was able to find. Hard to say what exactly occurred between Smith and the Cardinals in August if 1978.

On December 4, 1977, Smith announced his retirement. In August 1978, it was reported in the media that the Cardinals contacted Smith to return, but no contract was offered. In late September 1978, the Cowboys needed to add depth at tight end after Jay Saldi fractured his arm in the fourth game of the season against the St. Louis Cardinals. Head coach Tom Landry called Smith on Monday September 25, looking to convince him to come back from retirement and Smith signed with Dallas on September 28.

The split was very bitter. Dollar Bill was hated by many of the Cards’ players. The Cardiac Cards could have won it all if they’d have picked up some defensive help but the big guy wouldn’t pick up the check. You had to see things to believe them then. I’ve mentioned before that the rule that prevents teams from negotiating with college players before the draft was put in place because DB would elevate players in the draft who would sign for less money.
