Safety, Cards agree on five-year, $14 million deal

The Arizona Cardinals intercepted Super Bowl MVP Dexter Jackson two days after he was close to becoming a Pittsburgh Steelers.

By adding more money to their proposal over the past 48 hours, the Cardinals reached agreement Wednesday with Jackson, making him one of the highest paid free safeties in football. Jackson agreed to a five-year, $14 million deal that included a $2.75 million signing bonus.

Jackson
On Monday, the Steelers thought they had a deal with Jackson, who had all but accepted a five-year, $12.25 million contract offer that included a $2.75 million signing bonus.

The Cardinals kept putting more money in their offers that widened the differences over the first three years of the contract by $2.5 million. Under the Cardinals deal, Jackson will make $9.5 million compared to the $7 million over the first three years of the Steelers contract.

When the Cardinals increased their signing bonus from $2.4 million to $2.75 million and added almost $2 million to the entire five-year package, Jackson said yes.

That switch to the Cardinals naturally didn't please Steelers management.

"Dexter was all set to go to Pittsburgh, but you have to credit the Cardinals for showing the desire to get better as a team," said Jackson's agent, Peter Schaffer. "The Cardinals stepped up and impressed Dexter with what they are trying to do as an organization."

For Jackson, the Cardinals deal was a chance to cash in on his Super Bowl performance. Unfortunately for Jackson, the Bucs had a tight salary cap and couldn't offer more than $1 million and $1.5 million a year.

Jackson is considered the prime free safety in free agency. Jackson, 25, was a fourth-round choice of the Bucs in 1999 and became a fulltime starter in 2001.

This better not turn into another Duane Starks signing. Over priced and under preforming.

OK...

we have:

CB Starks
CB Barrett
SS Wilson
FS Jackson

We NOW need to get some pressure on the QB. Although this is a good pick-up, I still NEED a rush end and someone who can plug up a hole.

I don't want to see McKinnon taking on two blockers anymore. If you put Ronnie Mc on the Ravens when they won the SB...he'd be a HOt commodity. Ray Lewis often had an open shot at the ball carrier 'cuz Siragusa & Adams contained the interior of the line.

Translation: They gave him more money.

No, good signing by Arizona. It's better to give this type of money to a FS that isn't 32, even though I think Lassiter has been a great player for this organization.
I would, however, be wary of players making money of Super Bowl MVP awards. Larry Brown jumped a couple of Neil O'Donnell passes and is out of the league. Jackson did the same w/ Rich Gannon this January and his predecessor, Damian Robinson, got big money in NY and it turned out he was probably more of a product of the system in TB. NY runs that system, but Jason Ferguson, Sam Cowart, and Sam Garnes or no Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks and John Lynch.

It's about freakin time....

Here's to a signing A PLAYER, and someone who has the potential to be A GREAT PLAYER...

Hopefully, people such as ed and krang are right...Your words have informed me of his pluses, so the negatives I've thought of aren't so consuming (i.e. Larry Brown).

Let the floodgates open. :p

YYEEEEAAAHHH

Now lets go after blake, holliday, and peterson.

If we can get these three, our offseason would be rather bright indeed.

Yeah, what's the story on Peterson? That's a 'backer that can flat out play. Why haven't we gone after him?

I agree. But you never know. Maybe his agent is personna non grata. Maybe the Cards know his original team is poised to pounce once all the bids are in. Maybe he said something about not wanting to be here. Maybe - like Hugh Douglas - the Cards feel he's way overpriced. Maybe he's got "issues" only Graves knows about.
