Visited ASU this passed Saturday against USC.. From a couple people I have known inside the program they really pulled out all the stops when he was here.. ASU has a couple things going for them that the Big Boys don't want to admit as well

For one, ASU was the only school to have an unofficial visit, and they are also the first school he decided to see. According to him, ASU was his childhood team, even though he lived in Texas, he never followed or liked the Texas' and Oklahoma's of the world, his heart was always with ASU and the PAC-10..

It also doesn't hurt that his dad stared for the Devils as well..

One thing that also came out in the visit was TAZ.. He talked about how having a player of his caliber behind him was huge and how dominant the Defense looked against USC, but he would "put them over the top"...

All in all, the country looks as ASU as an afterthought, because the other schools on his lsit are the best of the best, and before the visit I may have agreed, but now, I am starting to get the feeling that ASU culd land the #1 overall prospect this coming year, and they will have TAZ and this defense to thank for it!

I saw this on the ticker that he was visiting during the game. Thank goodness it was against USC and not against Cal (when our bleachers were empty). I was proud of our defense, and the way they played... hopefully it was enough to get his attention. I would like to think that players want to go to a program that they will be associated with as the 'guy that earned them championship', rather than 'oh yeah, he was there when they won the championship'. Then again, not knowing all the in and outs of recruitment... there is probably just a lot of 'what else can you give me' negotiations.

I hope we get him. Heavens knows we need our defense to be perfect... cause the offense is a few years behind.

It could be Oklahoma, his twin sister is going there to play basketball. Word is that he wants to play hoops in college too, God knows Herb could use some frontcourt help.

Im trying to stay realistic about ASUs chances of landing him, going up against Oklahoma, Texas, et al is brutally tough.

Like Ive said before with Olsen and Smiths contracts ending at the end of this year, I hope they're let go/retire. That would mean a mix up in the ASU coaching staff and I hope DE and Lisa Love would be smart enough to try to bring Jeffcoat Sr in as an assistant. ASU isn't to the point where theyre 'beyond' that so to speak and Id hope its something theyd at least consider.

Also, anyone know what Jeffcoats accurate height is? According to his ESPN basketball profile he's 6'6'', according to his ESPN football profile and his Rivals profile he's 6'5'', and according to his Scout profile he's 6'4''.

If he is closer to the 6'6'' side of things he's probably big enough to play one of the front court positions for Herb and that could really help ASUs chances of him ending up in maroon and gold.

Pullard or Whiteside would be solid additions. Also, there are 3 4* safeties looking at ASU. Got to get at least one of them too. Getting Jeffcoat, Pullard or Whiteside, and one of those 3 safeties would be huge.

Why would that help ASU over Capel at OU and Barnes at UT?

Jeffcoat isn't risking everything playing basketball anyways. Didn't you have the same pipe dream about Brock Osweiler?

I didn't realize you were close with the Jeffcoat family and knew what Jackson was going to do. He keeps saying he wants to play college hoops in addition to football, but hey if MTFC says he won't he certainly won't!

He could help those other schools too, I was just making the point that to be a 4 in Herbs system you don't need to be super tall. He doesn't have NBA size for the PF position but that wouldn't matter at ASU. Other schools with superior basketball programs might not have as much room for an undersized PF.

Additionally Ive heard Sendek is interested in having Jeffcoat and that Jeffcoat may make another visit out to see the basketball program. I havent heard of OU and UT are doing the same are not (doesn't mean they are or arent, I just havent heard).

And sure Id love to see Osweiller play some basketball, why not? If Threet comes on next year and plays extremely well and then Peter Thomas does the same after him, Osweillers not going to get a lot of time to start. But thats all very much in the air right now, and no one knows what will happen. But as usual you've distorted what Ive said, made it seem ridiculous and then regurgitated it.

I don't have to know the Jeffcoats, it's common sense man. What a 17 year old kid says he wants to play is going to be a lot different than what a major NCAA college HC (especially one on the hot seat) or his parents who want him in the NFL are going to allow him to do.

There's dozens of high-major basketball and football recruits every year that are good enough to moonlight in another sport and 99% of them choose or are told not to. Feel free to hope this scenario is in that 1% though if it helps you sleep at night.

ASU's not going to hire Jim Jeffcoat as an assistant. Just not going to happen. First, Jeffcoat isn't an offensive coach nor does he have the pedigree to do so. Second, he's a newly minted defensive assistant and everyone's pretty happy with the defensive staff they have. Third, it would create the appearance of impropriety -- particularly with Jeffcoat being the father of the recruit.

Jim owns an insurance company and I don't think he's a normal assistant at Houston. I don't get the impression he has to do as much as the rest of the staff. He still owns his home in Plano and rents in Houston. Considering he spent more than a decade coaching defensive ends with the Cowboys, I'm not certain the job he's doing in Houston is a career ambition. He's passed up other previous (better) opportunities, although ASU has never called him.

Jeffcoat takes Texas over OU, Houston

PLANO, Texas -- Defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat is going to be a Texas Longhorn.

The nation's No. 2 recruit on the ESPNU 150 rankings ended the suspense Friday morning with an announcement in the Plano West High School gymnasium in front of a cheering student body. He said he finally came to the decision only days ago.

"It's definitely a relief," Jeffcoat said. "There's been a lot of speculation. People think they knew what I was thinking. No one knew what I was thinking except my family."

Jeffcoat had family to consider in his decision. The 6-foot-5, 225-pounder, who had 68.5 tackles, 8.5 sacks and two interceptions as a senior, had narrowed his finalists to three schools: Texas, Oklahoma and Houston.
