Following the initial wave of NFL free agency, which included the Jacksonville Jaguars making nine signings, what does the team's offseason roster now look like?
GM James Gladstone moved quickly once the NFL's legal tampering period opened by making nine signings on that first day. He would tell reporters later in the week that it was his goal to utilize free agency as a way to raise the floor of this roster.
"What we were seeking to do in pro free agency was to raise the floor of this football team and every player that we pursued and that we've now acquired is meeting that standard," Gladstone said.
"And by being nothing more than who they are and who we know them to be, both on and off the field, they're going to do exactly what we had hoped they do. And that's level up this ecosystem."
Like any team, there are still some roster holes to fill, whether it be adding some starting-caliber players to the roster or depth additions, but with 10 draft picks, including four within the top 100 and six in the first four rounds, the Jaguars have the ability to find some impact players to further round out their roster.
Below is a position-by-position look at where the roster currently sits with the first free-agency wave behind us. During the offseason and training camp, teams can have up to 90 players on their roster.
Quarterback: Trevor Lawrence, Nick Mullens, John Wolford
Perhaps the Jaguars want to make one more addition here. They have the draft capital and flexibility to do so, but a lot of teams go into training camp with only three quarterbacks as well. It all depends on what Liam Coen prefers.
Running back: Tank Bigsby, Travis Etienne, Keilan Robinson
Depth is a need here, but in what is considered a very deep running back draft class, there is the opportunity for the Jaguars to find some additional help as well. The run game, and the running back's ability to impact the passing game are key elements of Coen's offense.
Tight end: Johnny Mundt, Hunter Long, Brenton Strange, Patrick Murtagh, Shawn Bowman
The additions of Mundt and Long, coupled with already having Strange, provides the Jaguars with a strong foundation here. But given that this is a talented draft class at tight end, I would guess another addition is coming. With Coen wanting to be"multiple" on offense, look for tight ends with well-rounded skill sets.
Wide receiver: Gabe Davis, Dyami Brown, Brian Thomas Jr., Parker Washington, Josh Cephus, Louis Reez-Zammit, Austin Trammell, David White Jr.
This is a room that still needs some reshaping, even after signing Brown. While there are candidates on the roster who could step into that No. 2 role, it's also not a given that anyone does either. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Jaguars select two wide receivers in this year's draft to boost competition.
Offensive line: Walker Little, Ezra Cleveland, Robert Hainsey, Patrick Mekari, Anton Harrison, Chuma Edoga, Cole Van Lanen, Javon Foster, Luke Fortner, Cooper Hodges, Dieter Eiselen, Dennis Daley
The offensive line has been an emphasis for Gladstone and head coach Liam Coen. So I think they continue to add here, particularly looking to bolster their depth at guard and center.
Defensive line: Josh Hines-Allen, Travon Walker, Myles Cole, Arik Armstead, Maason Smith, DaVon Hamilton, Jordan Jefferson, Tyler Lacy
The Jaguars are going to go heavy here in the draft. It's the one big position of need that Gladstone has yet to address, it's one he's said he wants to prioritize, and this year's draft class has a lot of talent in the defensive trenches.
Linebacker: Devin Lloyd, Foyesade Oluokun, Chad Muma, Ventrell Miller, Yasir Abdullah
From a pure numbers perspective to get through training camp, more depth is needed here.
Cornerback: Tyson Campbell, Jourdan Lewis, Jarrian Jones, Montaric Brown, Deantre Prince, Zech McPhearson, Christian Braswell
Again, more depth is needed for camp, and while the addition of Lewis provides some stability as it allows Jones to move to the boundary, there should be competition for Jones out wide.
Safety: Eric Murray, Darnell Savage, Antonio Johnson, Andrew Wingard, Daniel Thomas
From the sounds of it, Murray will handle the free safety role, and Darnell Savage can be the strong safety, but bolstering the competition here should still be a priority for Gladstone.
Special teams: Logan Cooke, Ross Matiscik, Cam Little
