Jacksonville Jaguars' quarterback Trevor Lawrence is progressing well, following surgery on the left AC joint back in December on his non-throwing shoulder.
While meeting with reporters on Wednesday, with voluntary offseason programs underway for the Jaguars, Lawrence said that he was working out and has been throwing. However, he and the team are making sure to not do too much at once, as Lawrence progresses and works his way up to more throws and from further distances.
So for the time being, when the Jaguars are able to actually be on the practice field, Lawrence will remain on a "pitch count," as Liam Coen put it, as he continues to work his way back.
“He’ll be on a pitch count for those things in terms of where he has to get to — because he has little touch points he needs to reach before he can obviously get out on the grass and do it full speed," Coen said on Wednesday.
As far as when Lawrence will be back to being a full participant on the practice field, there isn't an established deadline at this time. But he is "very optimistic" that he will be good to go for the season.
“I’m very optimistic I’ll be perfectly good for the season,” Lawrence said. “But as far as just right now, I think just kind of pacing ourselves as OTAs go and working myself up to where I’m in shape as far as throwing. Just the amount of throws might be a little lighter to start and work our way up, just until I get really fully back. But I imagine that and then maybe just some handoff stuff will be a little limited. But besides that, I think that won’t last too long."
Lawrence suffered the shoulder injury in Week 9 of last season and missed Weeks 10 and 11. However, once he was placed on IR due to a concussion, he and the team thought it was best to get the shoulder surgery at that time, rather than putting it off until the end of the season.
"Everything’s moving forward," Coen added. "He feels really good right now. So, excited about that.”
