The Jacksonville Jaguars reportedly "checked in" on wide receiver Stefon Diggs before he ended up signing with the New England Patriots, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
“We saw the Patriots check in with Stefon Diggs about a week ago. He traveled to Foxborough, went through a physical, they got a chance to look at him, talk to him about his knee, the ACL he tore Week 8 last year against the Colts," Schefter said this past week on NFL Live via Jaguars on Sports Illustrated.
"After that visit, I think there was some contact with some other teams. I think the Broncos checked in. I think the Jaguars checked in. I think other teams were just checking in. But the Patriots certainly seemed to want Diggs the most, to the point where they offered him a three-year, $69 million contract with $26 million guaranteed.”
Now, checking in doesn't mean the Jaguars were in heavy pursuit of Diggs--we don't know the exact extent of how hard they pushed--but whatever level of interest that was there from Jacksonville, beating the contract that Diggs received from New England wasn't going to be easy.
In eight games last season, Diggs caught 47 passes with Houston for 496 yards with three touchdowns. From 2017 through 2023, which included three seasons in Minnesota and four with Buffalo, Diggs eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark each year during that span.
On five occasions, Diggs would surpass 1,200 yards, and twice he went over 1,500 yards, including a career-best 1,846 receiving yards in 2020, according to PFF.
What the Jaguars' inquiry tells us is that they are still looking to add to the receiver room--which shouldn't come as a surprise.
The Jaguars are in search of a complementary No. 2 option to pair with Brian Thomas Jr. While there are players on the roster already who could potentially step into that role, including Gabe Davis, Parker Washington, and Dyami Brown, it's also not a given that either player will provide that stability, so adding more high end competition is likely on GM James Gladstone's radar.
An early-round selection in this year's NFL draft at the receiver position is very much in play, potentially even as early as fifth overall with Arizona's Tetairoa McMillan.
