I was curious to compare the stats of the centers we have to those many fans here had wished the Suns had picked up and to those available next year.

What’s amazing is that through 7 or 8 games this year our centers are outperforming most of the players fans on this board had lobbied for. Granted, White has only played 3 games. However when you consider the cost or age of some of the other centers it’s hard not to look at the White trade as positive.

What many fans wanted us to pick up through sign or trade:

Olowokandi (Mins) 24 (pts) 6.8 (fg%) 45.6% (rbs) 4.8 (blks) 1.9
Tony Battie (Mins) 19 (pts) 4.8 (fg%) 47% (rbs) 3.9 (blks) .6
Vlad Stepania (Mins) 11 (pts) 2.1 (fg%) 28.6% (rbs) 3.9 (blks) .7
Mutombo (Mins) 24 (pts) 6 (fg%) 51% (rbs) 5.7 (blks) 1.7
Zo Mourning (Mins) 20 (pts) 7.6 (fg%) 42% (rbs) 2.8 (blks) .4
Elden Campbell (Mins) 20 (pts) 8.6 (fg%) 50% (rbs) 4.0 (blks) 1.4
Melvin Ely (Mins) 17 (pts) 5.7 (fg%) 43% (rbs) 3.7 (blks) 0.0

What we have now:

Jahidi White (Mins) 20 (pts) 11.3 (fg%) 76.5% (rbs) 5 (blks)1.0
Jake Voskuhl (Mins) 25 (pts) 5.0 (fg%) 38% (rbs) 5.4 (blks) .1
Scott Williams out with injury

What we had:
Only played in 3 games

Jake Tsakalidis (Mins) 18 (pts) 8.7 (fg%) 58% (rbs) 6.7 (blks) .3

What may be available next year:

Greg Ostertag (Mins) 31 (pts) 6.4 (fg%) 42% (rbs) 10 (blks) 2.0
Chris Mihm (Mins) 11 (pts) 7.0 (fg%) 56% (rbs) 4.3 (blks) .3
Mehmet Okur (Mins) 24 (pts) 9.4 (fg%) 42% (rbs) 8.1 (blks) 1.6
Adonal Foyle out with knee injury

I think any big man that is remotely competent will do well for the Suns. They will be left open around the hoop all day long on Marbury drives. People will be so worried about boxing out Marion and Stoudemire, that the center should get great rebounding chances.

Sad but true!

If Jerry had called tails would Jabbar have had the same career in PHX?

I think it is a curse for Suns never to have a good Center that is over 6'10"

Kareem (Lou Alcindor), when teamed with the great Oscar Robertson and a good Small Forward in Bobby Dandridge, won a Championship for the Bucks.

Ultimately, he went to the Lakers, of course.

It might have been the same scenario for the Suns. Even they could not have overlooked his dominance at Center, could they?

It might have changed the Suns guard-oriented philosophy for the next few decades, right up to the present.
